Bengaluru witnessed a landmark day for its transport infrastructure on August 10, 2025, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off three new Vande Bharat Express trains and inaugurated the long-awaited Yellow Line of Namma Metro. The dual events are set to transform both intercity travel and daily urban commuting for thousands across Karnataka.

According to The Hindu, the new Vande Bharat Express services include the much-anticipated Bengaluru–Belagavi route, along with two other corridors aimed at enhancing regional connectivity. Built with advanced features for speed, safety, and passenger comfort, these semi-high-speed trains are expected to significantly cut travel time between key cities, making business and leisure travel more efficient.

Alongside the intercity boost, the inauguration of the 19 km Yellow Line—linking RV Road (Ragigudda) to Bommasandra—marks a milestone for the city’s metro network. This elevated corridor, featuring 16 stations, will serve Bengaluru’s southern tech hub, residential zones, and industrial areas, easing daily congestion in some of the city’s busiest stretches.

Yellow Line: Easing Bengaluru’s Traffic Woes

Constructed at a cost of around ₹7,600 crore, the Yellow Line project had been in the works for years, facing delays due to rolling stock shortages and supply chain challenges. With operations commencing from Monday at 5 a.m., commuters can initially expect services every 25 minutes, with three trainsets in operation. Plans are already in place to gradually increase frequency as demand grows.

The line passes through crucial economic and transit points, including the bustling Silk Board Junction, BTM Layout, and Electronics City. For professionals working in Bengaluru’s IT corridor, the Yellow Line offers a faster, more reliable alternative to battling daily traffic jams.

A standout feature is the Infosys Foundation–Konappana Agrahara station, developed under a corporate partnership model and equipped with platform screen doors for safety. Two key interchange hubs—Jayadeva Hospital and Central Silk Board—will integrate with other metro corridors, offering smoother cross-city travel.

Feeder Services and Multi-Modal Integration

Recognising that metro success depends on first- and last-mile connectivity, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has launched feeder bus services along four new routes. These buses will connect Electronics City, Bommasandra, and Konappana Agrahara directly to metro stations, enabling seamless transfers.

The Indian Railways has also made operational adjustments in light of the dual inaugurations, with South Western Railway short-terminating or delaying certain services around KSR Bengaluru to accommodate the increased passenger movement expected.

Phase 3: Expanding the Metro’s Reach

In addition to inaugurating the Yellow Line, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for Namma Metro Phase 3. Valued at ₹15,610 crore, this phase will add 44.65 km to the network and introduce 31 elevated stations. Once complete, Phase 3 will extend metro coverage to more residential neighbourhoods, industrial clusters, and educational hubs, reinforcing Bengaluru’s push towards sustainable, integrated urban transport.

Symbolic and Strategic Significance

The combined inauguration of the Yellow Line and the new Vande Bharat trains reflects a dual focus on urban and regional connectivity. For Bengaluru, often criticised for its traffic bottlenecks, the Yellow Line represents not just a new commute option but a step towards decongesting one of India’s most traffic-heavy cities.

Meanwhile, the expansion of Vande Bharat services strengthens Karnataka’s position in the national high-speed rail network. The Bengaluru–Belagavi route, in particular, is expected to be a game changer for trade, tourism, and intercity business travel.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi underscored the government’s vision of a “modern, efficient, and interconnected India”, where transport projects are designed to work together to improve quality of life and boost economic growth. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who joined the Prime Minister for the ride on the inaugural Yellow Line service, highlighted the collaborative effort between state and central agencies to deliver these large-scale infrastructure projects.

With the Yellow Line ready for daily commuters and Vande Bharat trains poised to connect cities faster than ever, August 10 stands as a day when Karnataka took a significant leap in its mobility journey—one that blends speed, convenience, and forward-looking planning.
