Congress Launches ‘Vote Chori’ Portal; BJP Dismisses Electoral Fraud Claims as Political Theatre

Ground Zero of the Vote Theft

The Congress party has intensified its attack on the ruling BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI) with the launch of its ‘Vote Chori’ portal, an online platform inviting citizens to register against alleged voter list manipulation. The initiative follows Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s recent claim that the 2024 general elections were tainted by large-scale voter fraud.

According to The Times of India, unveiled on August 10, the portal aims to mobilize public participation in demanding greater electoral transparency. It features a video reiterating Gandhi’s charge of “huge criminal fraud”, including alleged evidence from one assembly segment in Bangalore Central where, he says, more than one lakh fake voters were added. Visitors who register receive a personalised certificate signed by senior Congress leaders, symbolising a pledge to protect democratic integrity.

BJP Rejects Charges, Calls Campaign “Misinformation”

The BJP has hit back strongly, branding the campaign a politically motivated exercise aimed at undermining the credibility of democratic institutions. Senior leaders have accused Rahul Gandhi of peddling misinformation and questioned why he continues to hold his Lok Sabha seat if he truly doubts the ECI’s impartiality.

Some BJP spokespersons have gone further, calling the Congress move a “post-defeat excuse” and insisting that India’s electoral process is among the most transparent in the world. The party also argues that raising doubts without evidence risks eroding public trust in constitutional bodies.

ECI Seeks Evidence, Warns of Legal Consequences

The Election Commission, maintaining its position as a neutral authority, has formally asked Rahul Gandhi to submit a signed, under-oath declaration along with detailed proof of the alleged irregularities—such as voter names, part numbers, and serial details. The Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer has invoked provisions of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, warning of legal penalties, including imprisonment of up to seven years, for submitting false claims.

A Polarised Political Battle

While Congress frames the portal as a civic mobilisation tool to safeguard democracy, the BJP views it as a calculated political offensive. The ECI, meanwhile, stands firm on due process, requiring substantiated evidence before taking further action.

The debate over the ‘Vote Chori’ portal is fast becoming a litmus test for both electoral transparency and the political narrative heading into upcoming state elections. Whether it will lead to systemic reforms or simply deepen partisan divisions remains to be seen.
