Punjab Vigilance Raids Kharar Realtor Ranjit Gill

In a dramatic turn of political events, prominent Kharar-based realtor and former Akali leader Ranjit Singh Gill found himself under the scanner of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau just hours after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to The Tribune, early morning on August 2, teams from the vigilance department conducted coordinated raids at his residence in Sector 2, Chandigarh, and at his real estate office in Kharar’s Gillco Valley.

The timing of the raids has triggered a political storm, with the BJP calling it a case of blatant vendetta by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab. Gill, who recently severed ties with the Shiromani Akali Dal, had formally joined the BJP the night before, at a function hosted at the residence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

As the raids unfolded, police presence at both locations was heavy. Vigilance officials were seen entering Gill’s properties in the early hours, reportedly carrying search warrants related to alleged irregularities in land deals and real estate investments. However, no official statement has been issued yet detailing the nature of the allegations or the outcome of the searches.

Political Shift Followed by Immediate Action

Ranjit Gill’s induction into the BJP came after weeks of speculation regarding his future political course. Once considered a close associate of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, Gill had contested the Kharar Assembly seat in both 2017 and 2022. However, his recent disillusionment with party functioning and the allocation of responsibilities reportedly prompted his exit. Sources close to Gill claim he was unhappy with the leadership for ignoring grassroots workers and sidelining veterans in favour of newcomers.

His sudden decision to join the BJP was seen as a strategic move, especially amid rumours that he was also being wooed by the AAP. Some BJP insiders claim that Gill opted for the BJP only after resisting pressure to join the ruling party in Punjab — a move that might have provoked the immediate vigilance action.

BJP Calls It Political Vendetta

The BJP has come out strongly in defence of Ranjit Gill, terming the raids an act of political vendetta aimed at intimidating new entrants. Senior leaders in the state unit accused the AAP government of misusing the state machinery to target political opponents. “This is not a coincidence. This is clearly meant to send a message to those who refuse to align with the ruling party,” said a BJP functionary, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The BJP’s central leadership is reportedly monitoring the situation closely, especially given that Gill’s induction was facilitated by senior Haryana BJP figures. Party insiders believe that targeting a newly joined member in such a manner reflects poorly on Punjab’s law enforcement neutrality.

AAP Maintains It’s a Legal Matter

On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party has defended the vigilance action, saying that law enforcement is acting independently of political developments. AAP leaders have refrained from making direct comments on the case but have suggested that the raids are part of a broader investigation into financial misconduct in real estate transactions.

An AAP spokesperson stated that the vigilance bureau operates under legal procedures and any action taken would have followed due process. “The timing may be unfortunate, but the law cannot wait for politics,” the spokesperson said, dismissing allegations of political targeting.

Real Estate Dealings Under Lens

While official details of the investigation remain under wraps, it is believed that the Vigilance Bureau is probing past land acquisitions, alleged illegal constructions, and financial discrepancies in real estate projects linked to Gill and his business associates. His firm, which has developed several high-profile projects in and around Kharar, has previously faced complaints related to regulatory clearances and buyer grievances.

Sources suggest that documents and digital records have been seized during the raids, and Gill may be summoned for questioning in the coming days. Legal experts point out that even if politically motivated, the action could lead to further scrutiny unless the charges are quickly refuted or proven baseless.

Future Course Uncertain

With no public statement yet from Ranjit Gill, the political temperature in Punjab continues to rise. His supporters argue that the timing of the raids is too precise to be dismissed as coincidence, while others caution against rushing to judgment without knowing the full scope of the case.

The incident comes at a time when political alignments in Punjab are in flux, and the BJP is actively trying to expand its footprint in the state. For now, Ranjit Gill finds himself caught at the intersection of law, politics, and optics — and how the events unfold from here will be closely watched across party lines.
