A 21-year-old Indian-origin truck driver, identified as Jashanpreet Singh from Yuba City, California, has been arrested following a deadly multi-vehicle collision on the I-10 Freeway in Ontario, Southern California. The crash, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, left three people dead and several others injured. Authorities confirmed that Singh was driving under the influence at the time of the accident and was residing in the United States without lawful immigration status.

The collision occurred on the westbound lanes of the freeway when Singh’s 18-wheeler reportedly failed to slow down as traffic ahead came to a halt. The resulting impact triggered a chain reaction involving several vehicles, including other trucks, leading to massive destruction and fatalities. Eyewitnesses described the truck as barreling into slower traffic with no attempt to brake, causing chaos and panic on the highway.

Investigators confirmed that Singh had entered the United States illegally in 2022 and was living in the country without authorization. He obtained a commercial driving license despite his immigration status. Following the crash, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer against him.

Singh was immediately taken into custody and is being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Authorities have initiated a full investigation into his driving record, criminal history, and the circumstances that allowed him to operate a commercial vehicle while undocumented.

The incident has raised serious questions about the licensing and oversight of commercial drivers, especially regarding individuals with undocumented status. Officials have emphasized the need to review procedures that allow commercial licenses to be issued without thorough verification of immigration status.

The victims of the crash have not been publicly identified. In addition to the three fatalities, at least four others were injured, including a roadside mechanic who was assisting a stalled vehicle at the time. The accident caused major traffic disruptions and required a multi-agency response to clear the wreckage safely.

Authorities are also analyzing the truck’s data recorder, driving logs, and conducting toxicology tests on Singh to determine the extent of impairment at the time of the crash. Further investigations are underway to examine whether the truck had been involved in prior incidents or if Singh had any criminal or traffic violations that contributed to the collision.

This incident underscores the dangers of impaired driving and highlights regulatory gaps in the U.S. trucking industry. The case has sparked renewed debate over the intersection of immigration enforcement and public safety, particularly concerning the operation of large commercial vehicles by individuals living in the country illegally.

Authorities have pledged to ensure that justice is served and have urged for tighter enforcement and monitoring to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
