In a high-stakes midnight encounter, four dreaded gangsters were killed in a fierce exchange of fire between Delhi Police’s Special Cell and Bihar Police on the outskirts of the national capital early Thursday morning. The operation, which unfolded near the Delhi–Haryana border around 1:30 a.m., brought an end to one of Bihar’s most intense interstate manhunts in recent months, reported Hindustan Times.

According to senior officials, the slain men were part of a notorious criminal gang involved in multiple cases of murder, extortion, and armed robbery across Bihar and Delhi. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a coordinated team from Delhi Police and Bihar Police tracked the suspects to their hideout in Najafgarh. When officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the gang opened fire, forcing the police to retaliate.

“The exchange of gunfire lasted nearly twenty minutes,” said a senior police official. “All four accused sustained fatal injuries on the spot. Our personnel displayed exemplary courage under fire.” One constable from Bihar Police suffered minor injuries during the encounter, while no other casualties were reported among law enforcement officers.

Police recovered four sophisticated pistols, several rounds of ammunition, and two vehicles believed to have been used in a string of violent crimes across Patna, Gaya, and Delhi-NCR. The slain gang members, officials said, were led by a feared criminal from Saran district, who had previously escaped several police crackdowns.

Investigators revealed that the gang had recently shifted its base from Bihar to Delhi, operating under fake identities. Their primary target, according to preliminary intelligence, was a businessman from North Delhi who had allegedly refused to pay extortion money.

Bihar DGP Rajwinder Singh confirmed that the gang had been under close surveillance for nearly three months. “This operation reflects the effectiveness of inter-state coordination and the commitment to dismantle organized crime networks that operate beyond state borders,” he said. Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora echoed the sentiment, calling the joint encounter “a decisive victory against cross-border criminal syndicates.”

Forensic teams arrived at the site in the early hours of Thursday to collect ballistic evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events. The bodies of the four gangsters have been sent to a government hospital for post-mortem examination, while identification is being verified through criminal databases in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Sources suggest that the gang was connected to two major crime networks specializing in arms smuggling and contract killings. Investigations are now focused on uncovering their financial backers and local informants who may have provided shelter during their stay in Delhi.

The encounter has reignited the public debate over police shootouts in India. While critics often question the legitimacy of such encounters, senior officers maintained that this was a case of self-defense after the gang opened fire first.

Residents living near the encounter site reported hearing multiple gunshots late into the night. “It was like a movie scene,” said a local resident. “We heard bursts of firing and saw a fleet of police vehicles arriving from all sides.”

By morning, the area was sealed off, with crime scene investigators inspecting the site amid a heavy police presence. Both state police departments are now collaborating to piece together the gang’s wider network and prevent similar criminal operations in the region.

The successful joint operation marks one of the most significant crackdowns on organized crime this year, highlighting the growing synergy between state forces in combating criminal gangs that operate across jurisdictional boundaries.
