In a horrifying incident that has shaken Punjab, an explosion at a firecracker factory in Muktsar district claimed the lives of at least five migrant workers and left over 30 others injured in the early hours of May 30, 2025. The tragedy took place around 1 AM at a licensed two-storey unit located along the Singhewala-Kotli road, where nearly 40 workers, many of them migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, were resting after a night shift when the blast tore through the building. The impact was so severe that the entire structure collapsed, trapping workers under the debris and causing panic in nearby villages.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene and worked through the night to pull out survivors. The injured were taken to AIIMS Bathinda and other nearby hospitals, with several in critical condition. Eyewitnesses described a massive fireball and a deafening sound that jolted the area awake. The incident has brought to the forefront critical questions about safety norms, working conditions, and the regulation of firecracker manufacturing units in the state and across India.
While officials confirmed that the factory was operating with a license and was situated away from residential zones, the magnitude of the blast has prompted a deeper investigation into whether standard safety protocols were being followed. Authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause of the explosion, but early reports suggest that a spark during the handling of explosive materials may have triggered the tragedy.
This is not an isolated case. Similar incidents have occurred in recent months, including deadly blasts at illegal or poorly regulated firecracker units in Tamil Nadu and Odisha. In May, two people were killed in an explosion at a unit near Thanjavur, while another blast in Bhadrak in April claimed two lives and left three injured. These recurring accidents highlight systemic failures in the enforcement of safety regulations within the fireworks industry.
The Muktsar blast serves as a grim reminder that even licensed units are not immune to disasters, and more stringent oversight is urgently needed. As rescue and investigation efforts continue, grieving families are demanding accountability and justice. With lives lost and many others scarred, the explosion has ignited a state-wide conversation around worker safety, regulation, and the real cost of negligence.
