Mohali Court Extends Bikram Majithia’s Vigilance Remand.

A Mohali court has approved a four-day extension of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia’s remand in the Vigilance Bureau’s disproportionate assets case. His initial seven-day remand concluded on Wednesday, and following a three-hour hearing, the court granted the additional custody at the request of the Vigilance Bureau.

Details of the Extension

Majithia appeared in the Mohali district court under tight security. The Vigilance Bureau filed an application seeking extended remand, claiming the need for further investigation into complex financial links. Prosecutor Ferry Sofat confirmed the court’s approval of the four-day extension, citing ongoing intelligence gathering efforts, as reported in the Hindustan Times .

FIR and Accusations

The case stems from an FIR lodged on June 25 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. It builds upon leads from a 2021 NDPS-based drug case investigation, alleging Majithia’s involvement in laundering approximately ₹540 crore through illicit means. He was initially arrested from his Amritsar residence and taken into Vigilance Bureau custody.

Majithia’s Legal Defense

Majithia is currently contesting the legality of his arrest and remand in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He contends that the FIR and remand are part of a “political witch-hunt” orchestrated by the Aam Aadmi Party government. His petition challenges procedural aspects, including the legitimacy of the remand application and the timing of his arrest.

What Happens Next

During the extended remand, the Vigilance Bureau is expected to deepen its probe into Majithia’s financial activities and asset disclosures. The Punjab and Haryana High Court will hear his legal challenge in the coming days. Meanwhile, the case continues to draw significant political and legal attention across Punjab.
