In a bold and highly anticipated move, the opposition alliance Mahagathbandhan, also known as the INDIA bloc, has officially declared Tejashwi Yadav as its Chief Ministerial candidate for the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. The announcement was made in a joint press conference in Patna by senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot, who confirmed the bloc’s decision to contest the polls as a united front.

At the same event, the alliance named Mukesh Sahani, leader of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), as its Deputy Chief Ministerial face — a decision seen as an effort to balance Bihar’s regional and caste dynamics ahead of the elections.

Unity on Display After Weeks of Manoeuvring

For several weeks, speculation had been rife over who would lead the opposition bloc, amid reports of internal differences regarding seat-sharing and leadership. The announcement finally ended the uncertainty.

Ashok Gehlot, acting as the Congress observer for Bihar, stated, “All of us sitting here have decided that in these elections, we support Tejashwi Yadav as the CM face.”

Tejashwi Yadav, in his address, said, “We, the people of Mahagathbandhan, do not just want to form the government or become the CM — we want to rebuild Bihar.” He added that if given even “20 months,” his alliance would achieve what the current administration failed to deliver in “20 years.”

The announcement is not just about leadership; it also signals a coordinated strategy to take on the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. During the press meet, Tejashwi questioned why the NDA had not declared its CM face yet, hinting at possible internal rifts within the ruling bloc.

Poll Pitch and Key Promises

With Tejashwi’s candidature now official, the Mahagathbandhan has sharpened its campaign narrative. The alliance is focusing on employment generation, women’s empowerment, improvement of law and order, and ending what it calls “double-engine misgovernance.”

Opposition leaders have consistently highlighted Bihar’s persistent issues — unemployment, mass migration, and rising crime — to position their alliance as a vehicle for change.

Tejashwi reiterated one of his most ambitious promises: “If we come to power, there will be no family without a government job in Bihar.” This bold claim underscores the bloc’s bid to woo the youth and first-time voters, who constitute a significant portion of the state’s electorate.

The Mahagathbandhan’s messaging has also leaned on the theme of dignity and development, projecting Tejashwi as a youthful alternative to Nitish Kumar’s long tenure. Party strategists believe that a generational shift in leadership could appeal to voters yearning for fresh ideas and energy.

What This Means for the NDA and Bihar Politics

The NDA, which currently governs Bihar, faces a new challenge. Its leaders are emphasising continuity, stability, and developmental achievements. However, the opposition’s decisive move has forced the NDA onto the defensive, making leadership a central campaign theme.

The BJP and JD(U) alliance is also grappling with its own seat-sharing complexities. With regional allies like Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samta Party demanding a larger share of constituencies, the NDA’s internal arithmetic is still unsettled.

Meanwhile, the RJD has already released its first list of 143 candidates, including Tejashwi Yadav contesting from Raghopur — a traditional Yadav stronghold. This early release demonstrates organisational readiness and signals confidence from the Mahagathbandhan leadership.

Upcoming Timeline and Next Steps

The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections will be held in two phases — the first on November 6 and the second on November 11. Counting of votes is scheduled for November 14.

With campaign activity picking up, both alliances are expected to intensify rallies and roadshows. For the Mahagathbandhan, the next few weeks will focus on consolidating alliances, resolving local seat disputes, and amplifying Tejashwi’s message of change.

For the NDA, the challenge lies in defending its record and presenting a unified leadership. The decision on whether Nitish Kumar continues as the CM face — or if a new name emerges — will be crucial in shaping voter sentiment.

As Bihar braces for yet another high-voltage electoral contest, the political script is set for a direct battle between youth-driven optimism and experience-laden continuity.
