In a powerful keynote address at the inaugural edition of the Annual Trident Lecture Series, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on August 5, 2025, called for swift adaptation to disruptive technologies, a rethinking of traditional military structures, and enhanced synergy among the Army, Navy, and Air Force to secure India’s defence preparedness in an evolving battlespace.
According to a Press Note by Press Information Bureau, held at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt, and hosted by the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS) to mark its Foundation Day, the event was a convergence of India’s top defence leadership, strategic thinkers, and scholars. Themed “Dominating the Future Battlespace”, the Lecture Series offered a thought-provoking platform to deliberate on the next-generation security landscape and transformative military doctrines.
Technological Transformation: The Key to Future Warfare
In his address, General Chauhan emphasized that the character of warfare is undergoing rapid evolution due to technological disruptions. He pointed out that future wars will not be determined solely by military might, but also by the ability to harness artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous systems, cyber capabilities, and space-based technologies.
“We must not only adapt to disruptive technologies but also lead their integration into our doctrines and operations. Legacy structures must evolve to meet future challenges,” said the CDS, outlining his vision for a technologically convergent and synergised defence force.
The CDS reiterated that only through joint operations, interoperability, and strategic coordination can India effectively respond to multi-domain threats—ranging from conventional to cyber and information warfare.
Honouring the Legacy of General Bipin Rawat
A special highlight of the day was the formal release of the inaugural General Bipin Rawat Paper titled “Manned-Unmanned Teaming”. The paper pays tribute to India’s first CDS and his visionary contribution to transforming India’s defence strategy with a focus on jointness and futuristic thinking. It explores how integrating manned platforms with unmanned systems can significantly enhance mission flexibility, surveillance, and strike capabilities in hostile environments.
The August 2025 issue of Synergy, the flagship journal of CENJOWS, was also launched during the event. This issue features scholarly articles and strategic analyses on themes like tri-service integration, hybrid threats, and indigenous innovation in the defence sector.
Urgent Need for Tri-Service Reforms
The event also included key lectures from top defence officials. Chief of Integrated Defence Staff delivered a compelling address on the “Urgency in Tri-Services Reforms”, stressing the need for critical timelines, inter-operable frameworks, and mission-oriented restructuring to ensure operational readiness and efficiency across all branches of the armed forces.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Doctrine, Organisation and Training) delved into “Imbibing Indian Heritage Statecraft in Future Warfighting”. His lecture drew on ancient Indian strategic thought and civilisational ethos to argue that modern Indian military doctrine can benefit from a nuanced understanding of heritage statecraft, particularly in areas like asymmetric warfare and resilience.
The Way Forward: Strategic Foresight & Policy Innovation
The Annual Trident Lecture Series is envisaged as a yearly forum fostering strategic dialogue, foresight, and policy innovation. This edition has reaffirmed CENJOWS’ role as a vital think tank in shaping India’s defence narrative by promoting interdisciplinary dialogue on defence strategy, technology, and joint warfare philosophy.
As India continues to face complex security challenges across its borders and beyond, the emphasis on jointness, innovation, and historical wisdom – combined with decisive institutional reforms – appears to be the way forward. With top leadership echoing the need for tri-services synergy, AI-driven warfare readiness, and civilisational consciousness, the Trident Lecture Series has paved the path for a defence doctrine rooted both in modern capability and ancient insight.
