Fauja Singh, the legendary marathon runner known not only for his exceptional achievements but also for his keen sense of style, was dressed impeccably for his last journey. According to The Tribune. honoring his love for dressing well, his family ensured he wore a jet-black three-piece suit paired with a matching turban and a striking red tie complemented by a pocket square. This attire was specially brought from the UK for his final rites, reflecting the respect and affection his family and friends held for him.
Balbir Singh, a close family friend, stated, “This is how he liked it. The family got it from the UK for his last rites.” Fauja’s youngest son, Harvinder Singh, shared with The Tribune that his father was passionate about clothes, saying, “Kapde da hi te shauk si ohna nu. That is why the family decided to bid him farewell like this. We have respectfully kept his shoes, and all belongings with us. This is what we are left with now.”
State Honours and a Community’s Final Goodbye
Fauja Singh was cremated with full state honours in Beas village, Jalandhar, a ceremony attended by mourners from nearby villages as well as political and social leaders. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria were among those who paid their respects, highlighting Fauja Singh’s status as a cherished icon of determination, discipline, and grace.
Chief Minister Mann announced that the village school would be named after Fauja Singh to preserve his memory and inspire future generations. Further, acknowledging Jalandhar’s reputation as a sports hub, he proposed that a statue of Fauja Singh be installed at the Government Sports College. “It will be decided as per the family’s wish,” Mann added, underscoring the respect for the family’s sentiments.
Governor Kataria reminisced about a recent ‘Nasha Mukt Yatra’ (drug-free pilgrimage) where he had walked alongside Fauja Singh, noting his strong desire to see Punjab free from drug addiction. The Governor reflected, “He really wanted to see Punjab free from drugs,” remembering the runner’s commitment not only to athletics but also to social causes.
National Recognition and Legacy
The family received a condolence letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who lauded Fauja Singh’s incredible physical and mental strength. The letter highlighted that starting long-distance running at an advanced age “speaks volumes of not only his physical fitness, but more importantly, his mental strength and resilience.”
Khushwant Singh, the renowned author who maintained a close association with Fauja Singh for two decades, remembered him as an exceptional character. He urged for efforts to inspire youth towards sports, advocating that brainstorming sessions be held “so that there are young Faujas in Punjab,” thereby continuing his legacy of perseverance and sportsmanship.
