Kerala is grappling with relentless heavy rainfall that has led to widespread disruption across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for eight districts, including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, warning of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm within 24 hours. An orange alert has been declared for six other districts, such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Thrissur.

In response to the severe weather conditions, district administrations have announced the closure of all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, anganwadis, and tuition centers, in nine districts on May 30. Additionally, night-time travel restrictions have been imposed in high-range areas of Idukki from 7 PM to 6 AM to ensure public safety.

The incessant downpour has caused significant flooding in several regions, leading to waterlogged roads and disrupted transportation services. In a concerning incident, 27 fishermen who went missing off the coast of Vizhinjam have returned safely, highlighting the dangers posed by the turbulent seas.

The IMD forecasts that heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds, will continue over the next few days due to persistent strong westerlies in the lower tropospheric levels over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea, with warnings of squally weather and wind speeds reaching up to 55 kmph off the Kerala coast.

As the state braces for continued adverse weather, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant, adhere to safety advisories, and stay updated through official channels. The situation underscores the importance of preparedness and caution during the monsoon season.
