In a powerful display of military might and political signaling, China staged its largest-ever military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. President Xi Jinping stood alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, underscoring a new axis of strategic solidarity.

The parade, held in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and along the capital’s Chang’an Avenue, showcased China’s most advanced weaponry, from hypersonic missiles and underwater drones to experimental robotic systems. Xi, riding in an open-top limousine, inspected formations of thousands of troops before delivering a speech that blended historical remembrance with sharp warnings. He declared that humanity stood at a crossroads between peace and war, dialogue and confrontation. His remarks were widely seen as veiled criticism of the United States and its allies.

The event concluded with the release of 80,000 white doves as a symbolic gesture of peace. Yet the atmosphere was unmistakably martial, signaling China’s determination to assert its global influence through both military and political strength.

The guest list carried equal symbolic weight. While Putin and Kim dominated the front rows, representatives from many nations in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East also attended. Leaders from the West, along with Japan, South Korea, and India, were notably absent, highlighting deepening divisions in global politics.

From Taipei, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te responded swiftly, warning that military strength must not replace democratic values and reaffirming Taiwan’s commitment to peace. In the United States, former President Donald Trump criticized the Beijing gathering, accusing Xi, Putin, and Kim of conspiring against Washington and mocking the show of unity.

For analysts, the parade marked a turning point in China’s global strategy. Xi’s rhetoric and the spectacle of authoritarian unity projected Beijing’s ambition to shape an alternative world order. With the United States facing accusations of policy inconsistency and wavering influence, China’s parade aimed to position the nation as both a stabilizing force and a rising superpower.
