Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated 184 newly constructed Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, marking a landmark effort to upgrade parliamentary housing infrastructure.

According to Hindustan Times, in his address, PM Modi highlighted how these modern residences will relieve MPs from housing challenges and enable them to focus more on public service. He reflected on the inadequate condition of older accommodations and emphasized that better living standards contribute to more effective governance.

Design, Features, and Sustainability at the Core

The complex comprises four towers – Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly – named after four major Indian rivers, symbolizing life and unity. Each flat spans a generous 5,000 square feet of carpet area, accommodating residential needs, office spaces, staff quarters, and integrated community facilities.

Developed using advanced construction techniques such as monolithic concrete with aluminium shuttering, the project shortened construction timelines while ensuring structural integrity. The buildings are earthquake resistant, Divyang-friendly, and equipped with a robust security framework.

Sustainability was a central focus: the complex adheres to GRIHA 3-star rating and the National Building Code 2016, featuring energy-efficient systems, renewable energy integration, advanced waste management, and a landscaped setting that reduces long-term maintenance costs.

A double-storey underground car park with a capacity for 500 vehicles, operational amenities like retail shops, and a community centre make the development self-sufficient and future-ready.

Strategic Significance and Economic Dimensions

PM Modi underscored the economic wisdom of the project, noting that from 2004 to 2014, no new housing units were built for Lok Sabha MPs despite rising demand – resulting in unnecessary expenses, especially in rental costs for ministries. He contrasted that previous neglect with the current strategy: more than 350 MP residences have been built since 2014, including the new flats, delivering long-term savings via reduced rental spending.

A Symbol of Inclusive and Sustainable Progress

At the inauguration, PM Modi planted a Sindoor sapling as part of the ceremony and acknowledged the efforts of construction workers, referred to as ‘shramjeevis’, highlighting the inclusive and workers-oriented spirit of the project.

He urged MPs living in the complex to foster unity by celebrating regional festivals, teaching each other different languages, and maintaining cleanliness and sustainability within the premises – emphasizing the ideals of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”

Looking Ahead

This housing complex not only addresses a critical infrastructural shortage but also reflects a forward-looking vision—optimised land use, inclusive design, environmental stewardship, and economic prudence in one integrated project. Its strategic proximity to the Parliament House further enhances convenience and continuity for MPs serving national interests.
