A massive explosion at a pharmaceutical manufacturing unit in Pashamylaram, Telangana, has left at least 12 people dead and over 30 injured, as a devastating reactor blast triggered a fierce fire in the facility on Monday morning. The tragic incident has raised serious concerns over industrial safety in India’s chemical and pharma sectors.
According to The Hindu , the blast occurred around 9:30 a.m. at Sigachi Industries Pvt. Ltd, a major pharma company located in the Pasamailaram Industrial Development Area in Sangareddy district. Initial reports suggest that a chemical reactor exploded due to an apparent build-up of pressure, resulting in a fire that engulfed a significant section of the factory and collapsed parts of the structure.
Deadly Blast and Widespread Panic
The sheer force of the blast was felt several hundred meters away. Eyewitnesses described a thunderous explosion followed by rising plumes of black smoke and panic among factory workers and nearby residents. Several workers were thrown out of the building due to the shockwave.
More than 11 fire tenders and specialized firefighting robots were deployed to control the blaze. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) joined the local police and fire department in search and rescue operations. Rescue workers retrieved multiple bodies from the rubble while dozens of injured workers were rushed to nearby hospitals in Patancheru and Hyderabad.
Investigation and Regulatory Oversight
While a detailed forensic analysis is underway, preliminary assessments point to a possible failure in the cooling or pressure relief systems of the reactor. Investigators are examining whether standard safety protocols were bypassed or inadequately implemented.
This is not the first such tragedy in the region. Telangana’s pharma belt, which includes industrial clusters in Patancheru, Bolarum, and Pashamylaram, has seen multiple such incidents in the past decade. Industrial safety advocates have long criticized the lack of stringent regulatory audits and poor enforcement of safety norms, especially in small- and mid-scale units operating with hazardous chemicals.
Corporate and Political Reactions
Sigachi Industries, whose operations span pharmaceutical excipients and industrial chemicals, witnessed a steep drop in stock value following the incident, as trading volatility reflected investor concern over the fallout. The company is yet to issue a comprehensive statement, though sources say internal audits are being initiated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and offered ₹2 lakh compensation to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy ordered a high-level probe and directed district officials to ensure medical assistance and relief to the affected families.
Human Toll and Workers’ Rights
Many of the workers at the site were daily-wage laborers, several hailing from Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The condition of some injured individuals remains critical, and doctors have confirmed extensive burn injuries and respiratory trauma in many patients.
Labour rights activists have demanded accountability, compensation, and long-overdue reforms in industrial zone safety protocols. They argue that the disaster could have been prevented had warning systems and regular audits been in place.
