Global auto major Toyota has confirmed that its rugged new SUV, the Land Cruiser FJ, is expected to arrive in India by the end of 2028. The model, positioned as an entry-to-mid-sized off-roader with the Land Cruiser badge, will be locally produced in India and is part of Toyota’s expansion plans for its ladder-frame adventure SUV portfolio, reported NDTV.

Platform and Production

The Land Cruiser FJ will sit on the IMV-0 ladder-frame platform — the same architecture that underpins Toyota’s Fortuner, Hilux, and Innova models in several markets. This construction lends durability and off-road capability, staying true to the Land Cruiser lineage. India is expected to act not only as a key market but also as a production hub for the FJ, with manufacturing planned at Toyota’s facility in Maharashtra.

No Diesel Engine for India

One of the headline points is that, unlike many of Toyota’s body-on-frame SUVs in India which offer diesel engines, the Land Cruiser FJ will not feature a diesel powertrain in the Indian market. Toyota has opted instead for petrol, strong-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options for the FJ line-up in India. The decision to skip diesel is seen as a response to stricter emission regulations and the difficulty of making heavy ladder-frame SUVs compliant in diesel form in the Indian context.

Engine and Specifications

For the Indian spec, Toyota is expected to offer a 2.7-litre petrol engine producing around 163 hp and 246 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic and a part-time 4WD system. Hybrid and PHEV powertrains will follow. The SUV is reported to be approximately 4,575 mm in length with a 2,580 mm wheelbase, making it shorter than some of the larger Land Cruiser siblings.

Target Price and Market Positioning

Toyota aims to launch the FJ in India with a starting price estimated at around ₹30 lakh (ex-showroom). Higher trims with hybrid or PHEV options could command a significant premium. The annual production target is set at around 89,000 units globally, with about 40,000 units expected for export markets. The FJ will likely fill the space between midsize lifestyle SUVs and larger premium off-roaders, offering Toyota’s reliability and off-road capability at a more accessible size.

Why It Matters

For Indian buyers, the Land Cruiser FJ represents a compelling blend of Toyota’s legendary off-road heritage with a more manageable size and newer powertrain technology. The absence of a diesel variant might surprise some traditional buyers used to high-torque diesels, but by skipping it, Toyota is signalling a shift towards petrol-hybrid alternatives for this SUV segment.

The localisation strategy is also important – if Toyota succeeds in manufacturing the FJ in India, it might help reduce costs, improve service infrastructure, and enhance resale value for buyers. The timing (2028) gives Toyota time to structure the roadmap for hybrids and alternatively-fuelled powertrains in India’s evolving emission and regulatory environment.

What to Watch

As the launch of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ in India approaches, several key aspects will be worth monitoring. The most crucial factor will be the final powertrain options — whether Toyota introduces hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions right from the start or rolls them out later as part of a phased strategy. Equally significant will be the official pricing and variant structure, with industry observers keen to see if Toyota can maintain its target of a sub-₹35 lakh price point. The final design details, including the SUV’s exact dimensions, seating configuration (whether it offers a two-row or three-row setup), and market-specific features, will also play an important role in defining its appeal to Indian buyers. Furthermore, enthusiasts will be watching for how Toyota positions the Land Cruiser FJ in terms of off-road capability and adventure-ready accessories, as the brand may emphasise its rugged lifestyle character through customisation options.
