Shiv Sena (UBT) Workers Assault Auto-Rickshaw Driver Over Alleged Anti-Marathi Remark in Palghar

Shiv Sena

In a disturbing incident that has gone viral on social media, workers of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction allegedly assaulted an auto-rickshaw driver in Palghar district, Maharashtra, accusing him of making derogatory remarks against the Marathi language, reported Mint.

Video Shows Assault and Forced Apology

The video, shot near Virar railway station, shows a group of Shiv Sena (UBT) members—both men and women—slapping and physically attacking the driver. The man is also seen being forced to offer a public apology for his alleged anti-Marathi comments.

Eyewitnesses claim that the confrontation escalated after the driver reportedly insulted Marathi-speaking passengers. The party workers confronted him, demanding an apology, and took matters into their own hands when the argument intensified.

Local Shiv Sena Leaders Defend Action

Reacting to the incident, the local Shiv Sena (UBT) city chief defended the workers’ actions, stating that they were provoked by an open insult to the Marathi language and culture. “We will not tolerate anyone speaking against Marathi in Maharashtra,” he said, adding that the response was aimed at protecting the pride of the state’s official language.

Police Yet to Receive Formal Complaint

The Palghar police have confirmed that they are aware of the video and the incident, but as of now, no formal complaint has been registered by either party. A senior officer said, “We have seen the video, and preliminary inquiry is underway. We will take action if a complaint is filed.”

Rise in Language-Related Clashes in Maharashtra

This incident follows a recent similar episode in Bhayandar, where MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) workers allegedly slapped a shopkeeper over his refusal to speak in Marathi. These events point to rising tensions over linguistic identity in the state, where political groups are becoming increasingly vocal about preserving Marathi culture in the face of migration and growing Hindi usage.

Social Media Divided

The video has sparked widespread debate online. While some users applauded the party’s stance in defending Marathi pride, others condemned the use of mob justice and warned against turning language issues into grounds for violence. Civil society members and opposition voices have urged authorities to ensure law and order prevails over political aggression.
