Samsung’s July 9 “Galaxy Unpacked” event in Brooklyn marked a major leap forward in foldable smartphone design. The new Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 are not only slimmer and lighter—they come deeply integrated with Galaxy AI. However, the Fold 7 notably ditches the S-Pen, a move that has sparked debate among users. Here’s an in-depth look at Samsung’s latest foldables and what their bold new design means for the future.

Design & Build: Sleek, Slim & Durable

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures just 8.9 mm when closed and 4.2 mm when unfolded, weighing only 215 grams—making it the thinnest and lightest Fold to date. Its new Armor FlexHinge and a 50% thicker ultra-thin glass layer make it significantly more durable while reducing the display crease.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7, Samsung’s more compact offering, now measures 13.7 mm when folded. It features a larger 4.1-inch edge-to-edge FlexWindow with ultra-bright 2,600-nit peak brightness, enhancing visibility in sunlight.

Cameras & Performance: AI-Powered Imaging

The Fold 7 features Samsung’s first-ever 200 MP wide sensor, accompanied by a 12 MP ultrawide and 10 MP telephoto lens. It is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor, paired with up to 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. The new ProVisual Engine enables advanced photo processing and AI-powered editing tools.

Meanwhile, the Flip 7 also gets a significant camera boost and leverages Galaxy AI for features like improved Nightography, scene detection, and live photo recommendations. Both phones offer flagship-grade camera experiences optimized by artificial intelligence.

Galaxy AI Integration: Smarter Every Step

Samsung is betting big on Galaxy AI, and both foldables run One UI 8 on Android 16. AI tools include Circle to Search, live translation, transcription, summarization, and visual recognition.

The Flip’s FlexWindow now supports Galaxy AI directly—users can respond to messages, take photos, control music, and access widgets without opening the phone. These capabilities enhance productivity and user experience while keeping the device closed.

S-Pen Removed from Fold 7: A Controversial Choice

One of the most talked-about changes is the removal of S-Pen support in the Fold 7. Samsung sacrificed stylus compatibility to achieve a thinner profile and make room for a more durable display.

Though S-Pen usage among Fold users has reportedly been low, its exclusion could alienate productivity-focused users who used it for note-taking, sketching, or editing. Samsung, however, claims the trade-off was necessary to deliver a better foldable experience and to compete more effectively in the global market.

Pricing and Availability

  • Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at ₹1,64,999 in India
  • Galaxy Z Flip 7 is priced from ₹94,999
  • A budget-friendly Z Flip 7 FE will be available starting at ₹79,999

Pre-orders are already live, with deliveries beginning July 25. Samsung is offering trade-in discounts and extended trial periods in select markets to sweeten the deal.

Final Thoughts: A Bold Leap with a Few Missed Steps

With the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7, Samsung has refined the foldable form factor—making them lighter, thinner, and smarter. Galaxy AI integration adds a futuristic edge, especially for users focused on productivity and creativity.

However, the removal of the S-Pen from the Fold 7 might be a tough pill to swallow for longtime Samsung fans who valued its versatility. It remains to be seen whether thinner design and better AI will be enough to retain loyal users or if competitors will seize the opportunity to offer stylus-enabled alternatives.
