Punjab BJP Stages Protests After CM Mann’s Critical Comments on PM Modi

CM Mann

Punjab’s BJP unit has launched a series of high-energy protests across the state following controversial remarks by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the “biggest realtor of India”, reported Hindustan Times BJP leaders are demanding a formal apology and an assurance that such remarks won’t be repeated.

Statewide Protests Escalate

In cities like Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Patiala, party activists staged sit-ins and blocked traffic to voice their outrage. They carried banners reading “Mann’s comments are an insult to every Indian citizen,” and dozens chanted slogans in support of PM Modi. Leaders attempted to approach the CM’s office in Chandigarh but were detained by police before they could proceed.

BJP Demands Public Apology, Diplomatic Tone

Punjab BJP president and local MPs have demanded that Bhagwant Mann immediately retract his “derogatory” statement and tender a public apology. They asserted that his words undermine public trust in national leadership and harm state‑Centre relations.

Mann’s Office Pushes Back

The Chief Minister’s office issued a mild rebuttal, stating that Mann’s criticism was targeted at perceived land-grabbing interests, not the office of the Prime Minister. The release emphasised that the CM stands by his views and that the protests were being “politicised by those uncomfortable with accountability.”

Political Storm Across Parties

Opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), have joined the fray—defending Mann’s right to freedom of speech. They cautioned against turning political disagreements into personal attacks. Congress leaders stayed mostly silent, with some suggesting that such statements should be handled without escalating the matter further.

Impact on State-Centre Relations

The protest marks a sharp flare-up in an already tense relationship between Punjab and the Centre. BJP leaders say the repercussions could affect pending central allocations for the state, including highway and irrigation projects, rural development schemes, and other key aid packages.

Political analysts state that while the protests may rally BJP supporters, they also risk backfiring by strengthening Mann’s position among voters who see him as daring to speak truth to power.
