Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday made a resolute declaration in the Rajya Sabha, asserting that he is “ready to pay any personal price” to safeguard the interests of Indian farmers. According to The Hindu, addressing the Upper House during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address, the Prime Minister dismissed allegations made by opposition parties that his government is working against farmers.

He categorically stated that such charges are not only baseless but also politically motivated. “Whatever I am doing is for the welfare of the farmers. If I have to pay a personal price for it, I am ready,” Modi said, drawing loud thumping of desks from treasury bench members.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions following the implementation of new agricultural policies and the ongoing concerns raised by sections of the farming community. Opposition parties have repeatedly accused the government of favouring corporates at the expense of small farmers an allegation Modi firmly refuted on the floor of the House.

He reiterated that his government has introduced reforms only after thorough consultation and study, aimed at strengthening the agricultural ecosystem. “We are not working for any one group. We are working for the future of Indian agriculture. Our intention is pure, and our aim is to empower the farmers,” he said.

In a fiery retort to criticism, the Prime Minister also took a swipe at the opposition, accusing them of spreading misinformation and fear. He said these parties have been “misleading the farmers for political gains” and ignoring the long-term benefits of reforms.

Modi cited several initiatives taken by his government such as direct benefit transfers, PM-Kisan Yojana, increased Minimum Support Prices (MSP), and investments in agri-infrastructure. “The facts speak for themselves. Our track record is clear – we have always stood by the farmers,” he stressed.

This powerful speech also served as a clear political message ahead of key assembly elections and amid the persistent murmurs of farmer protests brewing in some northern states. The Prime Minister’s firm stance, coupled with emotional appeal, could potentially reshape the narrative around agricultural reforms.

While the opposition is expected to continue its criticism, Wednesday’s speech may strike a chord with a large section of the rural electorate, especially those still sitting on the fence regarding the government’s intentions.
