In a significant move echoing the sentiments of millions of Sikhs across the globe, Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi, Member of Parliament from Patiala, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting the immediate reopening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. The corridor, which serves as a direct passage to one of Sikhism’s most sacred shrines, has remained closed for reasons yet to be formally addressed – causing deep anguish among the Sikh and Punjabi community both in India and abroad.

In his letter dated June 13, 2025, Patiala MP Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi Writes to PM Modi has highlighted the immense spiritual and historical importance of the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, the final resting place of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. He describes the corridor as a “powerful symbol of peace and religious unity” that not only facilitates pilgrimage but also strengthens interfaith and cross-border harmony.

A Spiritual Lifeline Between Borders

The Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, inaugurated in 2019 during the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, had been hailed as a monumental step in Indo-Pak diplomacy and interfaith outreach. It enabled Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit the holy site – located just across the international border in Pakistan’s Narowal district – without requiring a visa. The corridor allowed thousands to pay homage to the revered Guru, making a long-standing dream come true for many.

Dr. Gandhi, in his letter to the Prime Minister, mentions that he has been receiving numerous representations from his constituents and across Punjab, all expressing their heartfelt desire to visit Kartarpur Sahib once again. “Its closure deprives devotees of their right to pay respects and maintain spiritual connection with this sacred site,” the letter states.

Dr. Gandhi’s Persistent Advocacy for Patiala and Punjab

The Congress MP, known for his principled and people-centric approach, has consistently raised issues that resonate with the public sentiment. Just weeks earlier, on May 13, Dr. Gandhi had also written to Union Health Minister and BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda, seeking the operationalisation of a CGHS Wellness Centre in Patiala. Nadda promptly acknowledged the letter, confirming that the matter is being examined by the concerned division.

These back-to-back initiatives reflect Dr. Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to the people of Patiala and Punjab – ranging from healthcare infrastructure to religious rights and spiritual access.

Kartarpur Sahib: More Than a Pilgrimage

The Kartarpur Corridor is more than a physical passage; it is a spiritual artery that links millions of Sikhs with their Guru’s legacy. Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent the final years of his life in Kartarpur, preaching the core Sikh principles of equality, service, and devotion. For generations of Sikhs, the site has held deep emotional and spiritual resonance.

Its reopening is not merely a matter of convenience; it is about preserving access to a sacred space that defines the faith and identity of an entire community. Dr. Gandhi’s appeal to the Prime Minister is rooted in this spiritual imperative, calling upon the Government of India to uphold religious freedom and interfaith harmony by restoring access to the corridor.

A Call for Swift, Sensitive Action

With the corridor’s closure casting a shadow over pilgrimage plans and community sentiments, Dr. Gandhi’s letter comes as a timely and thoughtful intervention. It is expected to spark further dialogue and possibly action from the concerned ministries.

As Dr. Gandhi aptly concludes, the reopening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor would not only restore physical access but also reaffirm India’s commitment to religious inclusivity, cultural heritage, and the values of Guru Nanak’s teachings.

The ball now rests with the Centre – and the Sikh community awaits, with hope and prayer, a decision that aligns with both faith and constitutional values.
