The northeastern states of India are reeling under catastrophic floods that have displaced lakhs and claimed dozens of lives. Torrential rains, overflowing rivers, and sudden landslides have devastated parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur, and Mizoram, triggering a large-scale humanitarian crisis.

Assam Floods 2025: Brahmaputra Breaches, Over 5.35 Lakh Affected

Assam remains the worst-affected state with more than 5.35 lakh people impacted across 22 districts. The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are flowing dangerously above the red mark, inundating over 243 villages. Tragically, 11 lives have been lost so far in flood-related incidents.

The situation worsened after water was released from the Panyor Hydroelectric Plant in Arunachal Pradesh, breaching the Ranganadi embankment and submerging large areas. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited affected areas and blamed NEEPCO for failing to follow standard protocols.

Arunachal Pradesh Landslides Kill 10, Cut Off Villages

In Arunachal Pradesh, relentless rains have triggered deadly landslides, with at least 10 people killed across 23 districts. In East Kameng, seven individuals, including children, were buried alive when their vehicle was hit by a landslide.

Sikkim Tragedy: Army Personnel Missing After Landslide in North Sikkim

A devastating landslide in Chaten, North Sikkim, claimed the lives of three Indian Army soldiers, while six more, including a commanding officer and his family, remain missing. The military post was washed away by a cloudburst-induced slide, highlighting the peril soldiers face while serving in this fragile terrain.

Manipur and Mizoram Also Affected: Thousands Displaced

In Manipur, flash floods have affected over 56,000 people, with 10,477 houses damaged. Overflowing rivers and cracked embankments have forced families to take shelter in relief camps.

Mizoram has also suffered major disruptions, with 212 roads blocked due to landslides and waterlogging, hampering both rescue operations and daily life.

PM Modi Assures Full Support for Northeast Flood Relief Operations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the flood situation and assured all possible assistance. He has been in constant touch with the Chief Ministers of Assam and Sikkim, and the Governor of Manipur, to coordinate relief and rescue efforts.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed, and food supplies, temporary shelters, and medical aid are being rushed to the worst-hit areas.
