Mohali Retired Professor Shot Dead After Refusing to Pay ₹40 Lakh

In a shocking case of extortion and murder, a retired professor was shot dead after refusing to pay ₹40 lakh by the two men who picked him up in Mohali. The victim, Amarjeet Sihag, a respected educator and property owner, was abducted from outside his home and killed when he declined the ransom demand during the drive, reported Hindustan Times.

Kidnapping Over a ₹40 Lakh Ransom

Amarjeet Sihag, 62, left his residence in Aerocity on July 3 in the company of two acquaintances—identified as Vikram Singh and Balwinder Singh—whom he trusted. During the drive, they demanded ₹40 lakh. Sihag contacted his domestic help, asking urgently to arrange the sum, but later reneged. In retaliation, Balwinder reportedly shot him three times with a licensed pistol, after which they abandoned the body near Morni forest on the Panchkula side.

Discovery of the Body and Arrests

Police received information after the two suspects were arrested. They led officers to Morni forest, where Sihag’s decomposed body was recovered. Investigators confirmed the murder with the suspects’ confession that the gunfire took place near Panchkula. A case was registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act following the discovery.

Victim Profile and Background

Amarjeet Sihag was a retired government college professor from Sirsa, Haryana, and had founded RR Memorial School and a B.Ed college in Ellenabad. He had significant real estate holdings in Mohali. His sudden disappearance and violent death have deeply upset his family and the local academic community.

Motive: Refusal to Pay Ransom

Police confirmed the motive behind the murder was financial loss. During interrogation, the accused admitted that Sihag asked his domestic help to arrange ₹40 lakh. Upon his refusal to pay, the abduction escalated into murder. The licensed firearm used by one of the suspects is still being investigated and recovered.

Public Impact and Security Concerns

Local residents and community leaders have expressed alarm over the bold nature of the crime in a supposedly secure neighborhood. The incident marks the second high-profile murder in Mohali within a week. Citizens are calling for enhanced vigilance, better surveillance in sensitive zones like Aerocity, and a crackdown on ransom gang activity targeting elders.
