In a significant leadership reshuffle in the global sports media landscape, Ishan Chatterjee has been appointed as Chief Executive – Sports at JioStar, following the departure of Sanjog Gupta, who has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This transition marks a new chapter for both organizations as they reposition themselves for future growth.
Sanjog Gupta Takes the Helm at ICC
On July 7, 2025, Sanjog Gupta officially took over as the seventh CEO of the ICC. His appointment followed a global executive search that attracted over 2,500 candidates from 25 countries. ICC Chair Jay Shah noted Gupta’s impressive media expertise, strategic foresight, and fan-centric innovation as key reasons for his selection.
In his first statement as ICC CEO, Gupta emphasized his vision for cricket’s global growth, citing the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the increasing role of technology as key drivers for future expansion.
Ishan Chatterjee Rises to the Top at JioStar
Ishan Chatterjee, previously Chief Business Officer for Sports Revenue, SMB, and Creator Monetisation, has been promoted to head the sports vertical at JioStar. He will now oversee all sports-related business across JioHotstar and Star Sports, including strategy, content rights, monetisation, partnerships, and user engagement.
Chatterjee joined JioStar in 2024 after a 13-year career at Google, where he served as Managing Director for YouTube India. He has also held leadership roles at McKinsey and Unilever. His elevation is a strategic move by JioStar to double down on data-driven growth and digital monetisation.
Strong Backing from Leadership
Chatterjee’s performance during IPL 2025 was widely praised, particularly for initiatives such as third-party viewership measurement through Nielsen, the introduction of AI-powered audience segmentation, and new ad innovations targeting small and medium businesses.
JioStar’s leadership, including CEO Uday Shankar, highlighted Chatterjee’s role in transforming how the company engages users and monetises sports content, calling him a “natural choice” to lead the next phase.
Data-Driven Strategy and Unified Sports Business
Chatterjee’s appointment consolidates TV and digital sports operations under one roof, ensuring a unified business strategy across platforms. His digital-first perspective aligns with JioStar’s evolving approach—moving beyond traditional broadcasting to an ecosystem that integrates streaming, advertising, and commerce.
The company has already invested over ₹4,000 crore in sports tech, with a strong focus on analytics, AI tools, and personalised engagement models. Chatterjee’s leadership is expected to accelerate these initiatives and expand regional partnerships across India.
What This Means for JioStar and Indian Sports Media
- Unified Strategy: Combining digital and broadcast arms under one leader streamlines operations and opens cross-platform monetisation opportunities.
- Innovation Acceleration: Expect faster adoption of AI-led ad formats, interactive fan engagement tools, and creator-led content models.
- Expanded Influence: With leadership transitions at both JioStar and ICC, India’s influence in global cricket and sports media continues to grow.
Sanjog Gupta’s Global Role at the ICC
Gupta’s appointment as ICC CEO signals a shift toward a more media-savvy, innovation-driven approach to cricket governance. His experience in sports broadcasting and marketing is expected to reshape how cricket is consumed worldwide—especially through digital platforms.
His tenure is likely to focus on expanding women’s cricket, growing the sport in non-traditional markets, and ensuring successful inclusion in the Olympic Games. Gupta’s deep understanding of fan behaviour, content trends, and monetisation will be crucial as the ICC navigates this transformative era.
