In a dramatic twist in the Gopal Khemka murder case, police arrested one of the accused at the funeral of the Patna-based industrialist, just two days after the high-profile killing shook Bihar’s capital, according to TV18 News. The accused, Roshan Kumar, was taken into custody at the cremation site while attempting to pay his respects, leaving those in attendance stunned.

Industrialist Gunned Down Outside His Home

Gopal Khemka, a well-known businessman with interests in hospitals, fuel outlets, and real estate, was shot dead outside his residence near Gandhi Maidan, Patna, on the night of July 4. CCTV footage captured the chilling moment when assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at close range just as Khemka stepped out of his vehicle. The city’s business community and civil society were left in shock by the brazenness of the attack.

Accused Arrested with Garland at Cremation

In an unusual development, the police apprehended Roshan Kumar, a suspect in the case, during Khemka’s cremation on July 6. He was reportedly carrying a garland to pay tribute when officers moved in. Officials confirmed that Roshan had a prior criminal record and is being interrogated for his role in the murder and his links to possible co-conspirators.

History of Violence and Criminal Links

According to police records, the arrested accused had previously been involved in the murder of an autorickshaw driver and had been absconding for several months. Investigators suspect that his reappearance in Patna was part of a broader plan involving contract killing or gang rivalry. The Special Task Force is also exploring connections to incarcerated gang leaders who may have ordered the hit.

Special Investigation Team Formed

In response to the public outrage and gravity of the case, Bihar Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to fast-track the probe. The SIT comprises officers from the Central District Police and the Special Task Force, with specific directives to investigate any organized crime or contract killing syndicate involvement. Raids have also been conducted in Beur Central Jail to determine whether any jailed gangsters played a role in planning the murder.

Bihar Government Takes Cognizance

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar held an emergency review meeting with senior law enforcement officials on July 5 to assess the deteriorating law-and-order situation. He directed top police officers to ensure swift arrests and transparency in the investigation. State authorities have emphasized that strict action will be taken against anyone found shielding the accused or obstructing justice.

Business Community Demands Action

The murder has sent shockwaves through Patna’s business fraternity. Several trade associations, including the Bihar Industries Association, expressed deep concern over the safety of industrialists and entrepreneurs in the city. Delegations have submitted memorandums to the Chief Secretary and DGP, demanding immediate measures to curb rising crime and safeguard business interests.

Investigators Probe Possible Motives

Sources close to the investigation revealed that authorities are exploring multiple angles—including property disputes, financial enmity, and organized crime involvement. With the earlier murder of Khemka’s son in 2018 still unresolved, investigators are also considering whether this killing is part of a deeper vendetta or systemic targeting of the family.

What Comes Next

With the arrest of one accused, police are now tracking down other suspects believed to be involved in the planning and execution of the killing. Digital evidence, including mobile data and CCTV footage from surrounding areas, is being analysed to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The SIT is expected to submit a preliminary report within a week, and further arrests are likely. Meanwhile, Patna residents and the wider public are watching closely as the case unfolds.
