Delhi Audi Driver Arrested for Drunk Hit‑and‑Run That Injured Five Migrant Workers

Delhi Audi Driver Arrested

Delhi Police have arrested Utsav Shekhar, a 40‑year‑old property dealer from Dwarka, after his alcohol‑fueled Audi ran over five migrant workers sleeping on a footpath in Vasant Vihar, reported Mint. The horrific incident took place around 1:45 am on July 9, near Shiva Camp, close to an Indian Oil petrol pump.

Five Hospitalised, Including an Eight‑Year‑Old Girl

The victims – two couples and an eight‑year‑old girl – were sleeping near the footpath when the speeding luxury car struck them. All five were rushed to the hospital. One woman suffered chest and neck trauma, another had a fractured rib, and the child was reported to be in deep shock. All victims are migrant workers from Rajasthan, who had been living on the street for years.

Driver Intoxicated, Tried to Flee Scene

Initial medical examination revealed that Utsav Shekhar was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. After hitting the victims, he reportedly attempted to flee the scene in reverse, only to crash into a parked dumper nearby. Eyewitnesses said he appeared “shocked” and briefly tried to assist the victims before police intervened and detained him.

Police Reviewing CCTV Footage

The Delhi Police have registered a case under multiple sections related to reckless driving and causing hurt by an act endangering life. CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to determine the vehicle’s speed and to confirm whether the act was purely accidental or due to negligence exacerbated by intoxication.

Victims Demand Accountability

Speaking from her hospital bed, one of the injured women, Narayani, recounted, “The car ran over us… I got unconscious. We have been sleeping here for many years.” Her husband Ramchander added, “My wife’s rib is broken… Action must be taken against the driver.”

Rising Concern Over Drunk Driving in Delhi

This case highlights a recurring concern in the capital – reckless and drunk driving, often with fatal consequences for the city’s most vulnerable. Despite frequent drives by law enforcement and awareness campaigns, incidents like this underscore the urgent need for stricter enforcement and accountability.
