Zomato co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal has announced a bold pivot into regional aviation with his new startup, LAT Aerospace. In a significant investment move, Goyal has infused $20 million into the venture, which aims to democratize air travel by making it more affordable, frequent, and accessible, particularly for travelers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
A ‘Bus in the Sky’ for Small Towns
As reported in the DNA, the vision behind LAT Aerospace is to operate small STOL aircraft (short take-off and landing) accommodating 12–24 passengers, connecting underserved regions from compact “air-stops”—runways no bigger than parking lots. This addresses the paradox that India has over 450 airstrips, yet only around 150 are active, largely limiting regional connectivity. With a concept likened to “buses in the sky,” LAT Aerospace promises a hassle-free, walk-in-and-fly experience without the complexity of major airports.
Strategy and Scale
LAT Aerospace has already raised $50 million in seed funding, with Goyal contributing approximately $20 million. The company is now recruiting aerospace engineers, system designers, and aviation professionals to drive its ambitious roadmap. This move marks Goyal’s second major diversification beyond food tech, positioning himself as a serial entrepreneur expanding into transport infrastructure.
Potential Impact on Regional Mobility
If successful, LAT Aerospace could be transformative:
- Unlocking unused infrastructure: By utilising dormant airstrips, it could bring rapid air connectivity to remote areas.
- Reducing travel time versus slower road or rail journeys.
- Stimulating economic development in smaller towns by integrating them into air travel networks.
What’s Next? The startup is currently in stealth mode, actively partnering with regulatory bodies for certification and STOL operations, finalizing fleet configurations, and building runway infrastructure. The coming months will test LAT’s ability to navigate complex aviation regulations and secure its first commercial operations.
