The timing of this message is critical. The BJP has struggled to make serious inroads in Punjab post its split with the Akali Dal in 2020. The SAD, once a formidable force in Punjab politics, has also witnessed an erosion in its base. This speculation isn’t baseless. Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has openly advocated for a reunion with the Akali Dal. Strategic Realignments in the Offing
The letter to Harsimrat also needs to be read in the context of the BJP’s national strategy of building alliances in states where it lacks strong ground support. In Punjab, the party has realized the limits of going solo. With the AAP government facing criticism over governance and law & order, and Congress riddled with infighting, a BJP-SAD alliance could emerge as a viable alternative.
Moreover, Harsimrat Kaur Badal remains one of the more visible and articulate leaders in Punjab’s political arena. Reaching out to her may be the BJP’s way of extending an olive branch — with a message of reconciliation and mutual benefit.
