In a case that has stunned the nation, a newlywed couple’s romantic honeymoon in the scenic hills of Meghalaya ended in a brutal betrayal and murder. What began as a picture-perfect trip for Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam took a dark turn when Raja’s body was found at the base of a gorge, and shocking revelations pointed to his own wife as the alleged mastermind.
The couple, residents of Indore, had married on May 11 and left for their honeymoon on May 20. They visited tourist hotspots like Shillong and Cherrapunji and were last seen on May 23 trekking in the Nongriat region near the famous double-decker living root bridges. A local guide recalled spotting them with three unidentified men—an observation that later became crucial to the investigation.
Two days later, their rented scooty was found abandoned in the Sohrarim area. This discovery set off alarm bells and triggered a widespread search. On June 2, Raja’s body was recovered from a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. His identity was confirmed through a tattoo on his body. What appeared at first to be a tragic accident soon turned into a full-blown murder investigation.
According to Meghalaya Director General of Police I Nongrang, the crime was premeditated. Sonam allegedly hired contract killers to murder her husband during their honeymoon. The motive remains under investigation, but early reports suggest personal discord and a conspiracy hatched weeks before the trip. Police believe the hired men pushed Raja into the gorge after executing the murder.
The breakthrough came on June 9, when Sonam turned up at a roadside eatery in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Disoriented and reportedly in a distressed mental state, she contacted her family and surrendered shortly thereafter. On the same night, three men suspected to be her accomplices were arrested — two in Indore and one in Ghazipur. A fourth person involved in the conspiracy is still on the run.
The case, which quickly captured national attention, was cracked with a mix of traditional policework and digital forensics. Apart from CCTV footage and call records, the tip from the local guide—who remembered being turned away by the couple but noticed them accompanied by strangers—helped the Special Investigation Team connect the dots.
As chilling as the crime is, it is not without precedent. Cases like the Shrien and Anni Dewani honeymoon murder in South Africa, and the infamous Sheena Bora murder case in India, share a common thread — love gone tragically wrong, with an alleged betrayal by someone closest.
The Meghalaya honeymoon murder is a disturbing reminder of how easily trust can be shattered and lives lost when personal agendas spiral into violence. As Sonam and the others face police interrogation and judicial proceedings, questions loom: Was it greed? Revenge? Or something even more sinister?
For now, what was meant to be a journey of love will be remembered as a grim tale of betrayal, plotted not by a stranger, but by a spouse.
