In a groundbreaking move towards redefining how Indians share and verify their addresses, India Post has introduced DIGIPIN, a 10-character alphanumeric digital address system that promises hyper-local accuracy for every home and establishment in the country. The launch of DIGIPIN marks a significant evolution from the traditional six-digit PIN code introduced in 1972, signaling a new era of digital governance and logistical precision.
DIGIPIN, short for Digital Postal Index Number, is designed to pinpoint a location with an accuracy of up to 4×4 metres. The new system has been developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). It utilizes advanced geospatial technology to assign a unique digital code to every conceivable address—ranging from metropolitan apartments and rural huts to shops, warehouses, and even stalls in weekly markets.
This initiative aims to solve one of India’s most persistent logistical challenges—ambiguous or incomplete addresses that hinder last-mile delivery services, delay emergency response times, and limit the reach of government schemes in underserved areas.
Users can now visit the India Post portal (https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home) to generate their DIGIPIN in seconds. The system uses the location from a smartphone or any GNSS-enabled device to generate a unique 10-character code. The generated DIGIPIN is location-specific and remains valid even without internet access, making it highly useful in remote and digitally underserved regions. Importantly, the system collects no personal data, ensuring user privacy while offering unmatched accuracy.
Speaking on the launch, officials from India Post emphasized that DIGIPIN is not a replacement for existing PIN codes, but rather an enhancement that adds a digital layer of precision. While traditional PIN codes refer to broader postal regions, DIGIPIN provides micro-level accuracy, enabling smoother navigation for e-commerce platforms, postal deliveries, ambulance services, disaster relief, and government benefit distribution.
DIGIPIN is also designed to be open-source and integrable. Developers, logistics firms, and government departments can easily adopt it via publicly available APIs, laying the foundation for smart city infrastructure, precision mapping, and universal addressability.
The rollout of DIGIPIN has already begun in several pilot zones, with plans to expand nationwide in a phased manner. With the rapid digitization of services under the Digital India initiative, DIGIPIN is expected to become a cornerstone of address verification, digital identity mapping, and geolocation-based services.
As the nation increasingly moves toward contactless deliveries, hyperlocal commerce, and AI-driven logistics, India Post’s DIGIPIN might well become the new standard in how India connects locations with identities.
