Veteran Indian playback singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 71 following a cardiac arrest. According to Hindustan Times, her brother, noted music composer Lalit Pandit, confirmed the news, stating that she had been experiencing breathlessness and was being taken to Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital when she suffered the fatal attack around 7 pm.

Born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh (then part of Madhya Pradesh, now in Chhattisgarh), Sulakshana Pandit hailed from the illustrious Mewati Gharana, a family deeply rooted in classical music. She was the niece of classical legend Pandit Jasraj, and sister to the celebrated music composer duo Jatin-Lalit and actress Vijayta Pandit.

A Voice that Defined an Era

Sulakshana Pandit began singing at the tender age of nine and entered playback singing by the late 1960s. Her velvety, emotive voice soon found a permanent place in the golden era of Hindi cinema. She sang for leading actresses of her time and lent her voice to numerous hit tracks across the 1970s and 1980s.

Her acting career took off with Uljhan (1975), opposite Sanjeev Kumar, which turned out to be a breakthrough performance. She later appeared in popular films such as Sankoch (1976), Hera Pheri, Khandaan, and Waqt Ki Deewar, earning acclaim for her natural charm and expressive acting.

As a playback singer, she delivered memorable numbers like “Tu Hi Saagar Tu Hi Kinara,” “Pardesiya Tere Desh Mein,” and “Bekrar Dil Tut Gaya,” among many others. Her ability to combine melody with emotion made her one of the most distinctive voices of her generation. She was honoured with a Filmfare Award early in her career for her soulful renditions.

Retreat from the Spotlight

Despite a promising career in both singing and acting, Sulakshana Pandit gradually withdrew from the limelight during the late 1980s. Reports suggest that personal and health challenges contributed to her long period of reclusion. In recent years, she had been mostly confined to bed due to prolonged illness.

Colleagues and admirers often described her as a sensitive artist whose artistry was marked by depth and sincerity. Even in her years away from the public eye, her songs continued to echo on radio channels and digital playlists, preserving her legacy for new generations of listeners.

A Life of Music and Memories

Sulakshana Pandit belonged to a generation of artists who seamlessly transitioned between acting and singing — a rare feat in the entertainment industry. Her voice captured the emotional nuances of the 1970s Hindi film era, and her acting roles reflected grace, vulnerability and timeless charm.

She was also known for her deep affection for her co-star Sanjeev Kumar, a relationship that remained a poignant chapter in her life. Fans and film historians often recall her unwavering admiration for the late actor, symbolising the romantic idealism that defined their era.

Family and Final Rites

Her family, including her siblings from the Pandit musical lineage, were by her side during her final moments. The funeral is scheduled to take place in Mumbai on Friday, November 7, 2025. The film fraternity, including veteran musicians, singers, and actors, have expressed their condolences, remembering her as an artist whose voice and screen presence embodied the elegance of Indian cinema’s golden age.

As the industry mourns her loss, tributes continue to pour in on social media and from industry veterans. Her passing marks the end of an era — one that celebrated soulful music, pure melody and the fusion of classical and cinematic art. Sulakshana Pandit’s contribution to Indian cinema will continue to resonate, reminding us of a time when artistry meant emotion, melody and soul.
