India marked Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2025 – National Unity Day, with a grand ceremony at Kevadia, celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the “Iron Man of India.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national event at the Statue of Unity, calling Patel’s vision of national integration “the bedrock of modern India” and drawing sharp contrasts with decisions made during the early years of independence, reported The Hindu.

Republic-Day-Style Parade and Spectacle

The celebration featured a Republic Day-style parade, complete with state tableaux, armed-forces contingents, school bands, and a fly-past by the Indian Air Force under Operation Suryakiran. Over 11,000 spectators witnessed the event, which reflected India’s cultural diversity and its unity in spirit.

Ten state-themed tableaux depicted regional heritage and development, while students and NCC cadets showcased drills celebrating the theme “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”

Modi Invokes Patel’s Legacy – and the Kashmir Question

In a speech that blended tribute with political messaging, Prime Minister Modi praised Sardar Patel’s decisive role in unifying more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union. He said, “It was because of Sardar Patel’s iron resolve that India stands united today.”

However, Modi also pointedly referred to the Kashmir issue, linking it to what he described as “errors of judgment” made by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. He remarked that while Patel successfully integrated almost the entire subcontinent, Kashmir was “kept out of his domain,” and the repercussions of that choice “haunted the nation for decades.”

Without naming Nehru directly, Modi said, “Had Sardar Saab handled Jammu and Kashmir, the wounds we suffered and the tears of generations might never have existed.” He added that the special status once given to Jammu and Kashmir had “encouraged separatism and allowed terrorism to flourish,” until his government fully integrated the region by revoking Article 370 in 2019.

The Prime Minister’s comments drew loud applause from the crowd gathered at Kevadia and resonated across social media, where the hashtag #RashtriyaEktaDiwas trended throughout the day.

The Message of Unity and Resilience

Reiterating the symbolic importance of the day, Modi said Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was as significant as Independence Day and Republic Day. He urged citizens to remain alert to forces attempting to divide society through misinformation, extremism, or political opportunism.

“This day reminds us that unity is not inherited — it must be protected by every generation,” he said, urging the youth to uphold Patel’s values of discipline, patriotism, and service.

Celebrations Across India

The national event at Kevadia was mirrored by large-scale celebrations across India. From Delhi to Chennai and Chandigarh to Guwahati, lakhs of people joined ‘Run for Unity’ rallies and ‘Ekta Padyatras.’ Educational institutions held special assemblies, exhibitions, and debates on Patel’s contributions.

In Delhi, tight security arrangements were in place, with traffic restrictions around key roads. Banks and offices remained open since October 31 is not a public holiday in most states.

Remembering the Iron Man

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, independent India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, is credited with integrating the princely states into one nation after 1947. His ability to combine firmness with diplomacy earned him the title Iron Man of India.

In his address, Modi described the Statue of Unity – the world’s tallest statue at 182 metres as a living symbol of Patel’s vision. “This monument reminds us what a united India can achieve when guided by courage and conviction,” he said.

A Legacy Revisited

The 2025 celebrations, marking Patel’s 150th birth anniversary, reignited debate over how India’s early leadership approached integration. While Patel remains admired across political lines, Modi’s remarks renewed discussion about Jawaharlal Nehru’s decision to handle the Kashmir dossier personally, a move historians continue to assess for its long-term impact. As chants of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” echoed across the Narmada valley, the day ended as both a tribute to Patel’s unity vision and a reminder of the enduring complexities of India’s nation-building journey.
