Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday strongly criticised the Supreme Court’s directive mandating the removal of all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR. He described the decision as “a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy,” asserting that the animals are “not problems to be erased.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi wrote:
“The SC’s directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR is a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy. These voiceless souls are not ‘problems’ to be erased.
Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care can keep streets safe – without cruelty. Blanket removals are cruel, shortsighted, and strip us of compassion. We can ensure public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand.”

What the Supreme Court Ordered

The Supreme Court has directed authorities in Delhi-NCR to round up all stray dogs—sterilised or not—and relocate them to shelters within eight weeks. No captured dogs are to be returned to the streets. The move follows concerns over rising dog-bite incidents and instances of rabies-related fatalities.

Mixed Reactions

Reactions to the order remain divided. Supporters argue the move is essential for safeguarding vulnerable groups like children and senior citizens. However, animal rights proponents warn that the directive may escalate human–animal conflict and lacks infrastructure backing.
Rahul Gandhi’s response echoes these sentiments, advocating for alternatives such as sterilisation, vaccination, and community-driven solutions.
