In a rare and heartening feat from Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu, 49-year-old physiotherapist Amuthavalli Manivannan and her daughter M. Samyuktha have both cleared the highly competitive NEET UG 2025 examination. While Samyuktha is exploring options in the general category, her mother has already secured admission to Virudhunagar Government Medical College under the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD) quota, reported The Hindu. A Dream Deferred, Now Fulfilled
Amuthavalli had long aspired to become a doctor, but financial constraints and life’s responsibilities had led her to pursue physiotherapy instead. For nearly three decades, the dream remained shelved – until her daughter began preparing for NEET. Inspired by Samyuktha’s dedication, Amuthavalli decided to take a leap of faith and prepare for the exam herself. Using her daughter’s notes and books, she studied consistently for six months, often burning the midnight oil. Her passion, combined with experience and maturity, helped her clear NEET with 147 marks – enough to earn a medical seat under the PwD category.
Studying as a Team
This unique mother-daughter duo turned their home into a study hub. Samyuktha, a CBSE student, had enrolled in a coaching institute and regularly took mock tests. Amuthavalli, on the other hand, focused on self-study and revision, often seeking clarification from her daughter on newer concepts. Their bond strengthened through shared purpose – while Samyuktha developed deeper understanding by helping her mother, Amuthavalli drew energy and motivation from her daughter’s discipline and routine.
In the NEET results, Samyuktha secured 450 marks and is hopeful of admission under the general category. Though they won’t attend the same college, they are both poised to enter the world of medicine – an extraordinary parallel journey that began at home.

Amuthavalli’s husband played a crucial role in enabling both mother and daughter to chase their medical dreams. From managing household responsibilities to offering moral support, the family worked as a unit.
