Legendary centenarian marathon runner Fauja Singh has died in a tragic road accident in Punjab’s Jalandhar, authorities confirmed late on July 14, reported The Tribune . The 114-year-old athlete, globally revered for his late-life achievements in long-distance running, was struck by an unidentified vehicle while crossing a road in his native village of Beas. The unfortunate incident has left a deep void in both the local community and the global running fraternity.

Fauja Singh, popularly known as the “Turbaned Tornado,” began marathon running at the age of 89 and quickly rose to international fame. His incredible journey included finishing prestigious events like the London, Toronto, and New York marathons, many of them well into his 100s. He was crossing the main road in Beas village when the accident occurred around 3:30 pm. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Singh succumbed to his injuries. The vehicle involved fled the scene, and police are actively investigating the matter and appealing to the public for information.

He carried the Olympic torch in 2012 and earned numerous honours, inspiring people with his vegetarian lifestyle, simple habits, and unwavering discipline.
