114-year-old Marathon Legend Fauja Singh Dies in Jalandhar Road Accident

Legendary centenarian marathon runner Fauja Singh has died in a tragic road accident in Punjab’s Jalandhar, authorities confirmed late on July 14, reported The Tribune . The 114-year-old athlete, globally revered for his late-life achievements in long-distance running, was struck by an unidentified vehicle while crossing a road in his native village of Beas. The unfortunate incident has left a deep void in both the local community and the global running fraternity.

A Beacon of Resilience from Beas

Fauja Singh, popularly known as the “Turbaned Tornado,” began marathon running at the age of 89 and quickly rose to international fame. His incredible journey included finishing prestigious events like the London, Toronto, and New York marathons, many of them well into his 100s. Despite some of his records not being officially recognized due to documentation norms, his influence transcended statistics.

He was crossing the main road in Beas village when the accident occurred around 3:30 pm. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Singh succumbed to his injuries. The vehicle involved fled the scene, and police are actively investigating the matter and appealing to the public for information.

From Punjab to the World

Though rooted in his native Punjab, Fauja Singh’s story captured hearts around the globe. He carried the Olympic torch in 2012 and earned numerous honours, inspiring people with his vegetarian lifestyle, simple habits, and unwavering discipline. He often spoke of how his faith, clean living, and daily walks kept him going strong even past the age of 100.

Back home, Fauja Singh was more than a celebrity. He frequently returned to participate in community marathons and youth engagement programs. His humble presence and encouraging words made him a much-loved figure, especially in and around Jalandhar.

Public Outcry and Emotional Tributes

News of his passing spread rapidly on social media and news outlets, sparking an outpouring of grief. Runners, fans, and public figures paid heartfelt tributes, calling his life “a masterclass in discipline and optimism.” Several schools and sports groups in Punjab announced plans to hold tribute events and runs in his memory.

Punjab’s Sports Minister issued a formal condolence message, saying, “Fauja Singh was a personification of human willpower. His journey showed us that age is no barrier when the heart is young.”

Call for Accountability and Safer Roads

As police continue their search for the unidentified driver, residents of Beas have demanded improved road safety measures. There is growing concern about traffic speed near village roads and lack of pedestrian zones, especially for elderly residents. The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by pedestrians in semi-urban areas.

Legacy of an Extraordinary Life

Fauja Singh’s story will remain etched in the annals of sporting history. Born in 1911, he began running as a coping mechanism after personal tragedies, and went on to become a global icon. His values—clean living, humility, and perseverance—continue to inspire people of all ages.

In his own words during a past interview, he had said, “I run while talking to God.” That spiritual and determined approach to life resonated with many. In honour of his legacy, local running clubs and schools across India are planning awareness events and commemorative runs.
