A fugitive terrorist identified as Harjeet Singh Laddi has claimed responsibility for the gunfire, which shattered the café’s windows and triggered fresh concerns about the safety of Indian-origin public figures abroad. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident has rattled the diaspora and raised questions about growing threats to Indian businesses overseas.
Surrey Police were alerted to the incident at around 1:50 am after multiple shots were heard near the café located in the 8400 block of 120 Street. Officers discovered bullet-riddled windows and shattered glass, but no victims. The police stated that determining motive is a priority and that connections to prior threats or extortion attempts are being investigated. As of now, no suspects have been arrested.
In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram, the café’s management described the incident as “heartbreaking” yet vowed to persevere. They thanked authorities for their swift response and vowed to “stand firm against violence,” stressing that Kap’s Cafe is more than a business—it represents community, warmth, and resilience.
The café had opened only on July 4, swiftly becoming a popular gathering spot for the Indian diaspora in the region. It coincided with the international launch of The Kapil Sharma Show Season 3 on Netflix. Though Kapil Sharma himself is not in Canada at present, his global presence appears to have made his new venture—inadvertently—a target.
Observers warn that this incident signals a troubling escalation in extremist activity by Khalistani elements targeting prominent individuals and institutions abroad. Canada’s intelligence service, CSIS, had recently cautioned about cross-border threats orchestrated from diaspora communities.
