Ani Mangaluru’s journey from begging on the streets to becoming a respected entrepreneur, fitness coach, and film producer is a powerful story of grit, transformation, and leadership. As a transgender woman from Karnataka, Ani defied stereotypes and societal rejection to become a true trans trailblazer—earning admiration not just for her personal success, but for creating opportunities and dignity for others in the transgender community.

Her life took a dramatic turn in 2021 when she underwent gender-affirming surgery in Bengaluru. Yet, instead of relief, she encountered further hardship. Landlords refused to rent to her, employers turned her away, and the streets became her only option. She was forced to beg for survival. One evening in Mangaluru, after hours of begging, Ani tried to catch an auto-rickshaw. None stopped. That moment of humiliation sparked a resolve—she would never again be in a position where her dignity could be denied, as featured by The Better India.

Turning Point on Three Wheels

With the support of her mother, Ani managed to purchase a second-hand auto-rickshaw. This small vehicle would soon become a symbol of empowerment. She didn’t stop at one—Ani eventually built a fleet of four auto-rickshaws. Each one carried a message of kindness, with stickers offering free rides to pregnant women and elderly transgender persons. Her initiative wasn’t just about earning a livelihood—it was a mission to give back to the community that often faces neglect and invisibility.

Ani now earns a modest rental income from her autos, but her real earning is the respect and love of those she serves. She transformed public transport into a tool for dignity and inclusion, creating ripples of change in the lives of people society often ignores.

Fitness, Film, and Finding Her Voice

Ani didn’t stop at being an entrepreneur. She trained as a gym instructor and now works as a fitness coach, helping others build strength—both physical and emotional. In yet another leap, she entered the Kannada film industry, acting and co-producing a movie titled Shivaleela. Through this, she brought transgender narratives into a space that has long excluded them, once again challenging the norm and redefining representation.

A Bigger Vision

Ani’s dreams stretch far beyond autos and acting. She wants to create a shelter home for elderly transgender people—a safe, loving space where no one is abandoned in old age. She also hopes to receive support from the government to expand her fleet and build a sustainable model of trans-inclusive transport services. Her vision is rooted not just in business, but in compassion and structural change.

Why Ani’s Story Matters

Ani’s journey shows us that personal transformation can ignite social reform. She turned rejection into resilience and pain into purpose. Her story is not just inspiring for the transgender community—it’s a wake-up call for society to open its heart and infrastructure to those we too often push to the margins.

A Wave of Change

Ani is not alone in this tide of transformation. Across Karnataka, more transgender individuals are stepping into roles of leadership, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. From café owners to artists and activists, a quiet revolution is underway—one that challenges discrimination and builds pathways for inclusion. Ani’s voice is a strong, clear note in this larger chorus for change.

The Road Ahead

Today, Ani divides her time between managing her auto fleet and leading fitness sessions. But her eyes are set firmly on the future. She dreams of taking her initiative to other cities, producing more films, and mentoring young transgender individuals to believe in their worth. With a little more support—from governments, communities, and individuals—Ani’s model could become a national symbol of inclusive progress.
