In a major diplomatic push, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on his longest diplomatic tour in 10 years, covering five nations in eight days, with the BRICS agenda and Global South partnerships at the heart of the mission. From July 2 to July 9, PM Modi will travel to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, strengthening India’s ties across Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. This multi-country engagement is expected to deepen strategic, economic, and cultural relations while reaffirming India’s role as a key global player.
Ghana: A Renewed African Bond
The first stop on PM Modi’s 5-nation tour is Ghana, marking the first Indian Prime Ministerial visit to the West African nation in nearly three decades. PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with President Nana Akufo-Addo, focusing on trade, technology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare. A special highlight will be India’s support for Ghana’s vaccine manufacturing initiative and strengthening cooperation in defense and cybersecurity, as reported by Hindustan Times . The Indian diaspora in Accra is also gearing up to welcome Modi with enthusiasm, adding cultural significance to the visit.
Trinidad & Tobago: Celebrating 180 Years of Indian Heritage
In Trinidad & Tobago, PM Modi will engage with top leaders and address the country’s Parliament. This visit holds both political and emotional value, coinciding with the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in the Caribbean nation. It is the first such visit by an Indian PM in over two decades. Modi’s discussions will likely revolve around trade, digital connectivity, and climate resilience—areas where both nations have shown mutual interest.
Argentina: Expanding Strategic and Economic Horizons
PM Modi’s visit to Argentina comes at a time when both countries are looking to diversify their global partnerships. During talks with Argentine President Javier Milei, topics such as critical minerals like lithium, food security, renewable energy, and defense cooperation will be on the table. Argentina is a key supplier of lithium, crucial for India’s electric vehicle and clean energy goals, making this leg of the tour strategically important.
Brazil: BRICS Summit Takes Center Stage
One of the most high-profile segments of this eight-day diplomatic tour is PM Modi’s participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil from July 5 to 8. Leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa will gather in Brasilia to deliberate on a wide range of issues including global security, counterterrorism, and trade realignment.
India is expected to raise concerns over cross-border terrorism, referencing recent incidents such as the Pahalgam attack. Additionally, bilateral meetings with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will aim to boost cooperation in the fields of energy, defense, information technology, and space exploration.
Namibia: Digital Diplomacy and Development
PM Modi’s final stop is Namibia, which has not hosted an Indian Prime Minister in over 27 years. Here, India’s focus will be on expanding digital infrastructure, particularly by introducing India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to Namibia’s banking system. This move is in line with India’s vision of sharing its successful digital innovations with other developing nations. Modi will also address the Namibian Parliament and explore opportunities in mining, healthcare, and education.
A Strategic Outreach to the Global South
Throughout this 5-nation, 8-day tour, PM Modi is expected to emphasize India’s commitment to the Global South, a recurring theme in his recent foreign policy efforts. Discussions around critical minerals, trade diversification, digital governance, and sustainable development are high on the agenda. Modi’s tour also positions India as a leader in shaping the post-pandemic global order, particularly in regions often overlooked in traditional foreign policy alignments.
A Tour That Redefines India’s Global Posture
PM Modi’s eight-day journey across five nations—his longest diplomatic tour in a decade—underscores a strategic recalibration of India’s global engagement. By integrating high-level talks, cultural diplomacy, and multilateral platforms like BRICS, the tour sets the tone for India’s expanding role on the world stage. As Modi meets world leaders and addresses parliaments and summits, the message is clear: India is not just participating in global affairs—it is helping to shape them.
