The White House has confirmed that the Trump-Modi relationship remains “very good” and that an official announcement on the long-anticipated US-India trade deal could be made soon. In a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the strong rapport between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling India a “very strategic ally” and emphasizing the progress both nations have made toward finalizing the trade agreement, reported The Indian Express .

This update comes at a critical time as negotiations between India and the United States intensify, aiming to conclude an interim trade deal that has been under discussion for months. The two countries have been working to resolve tariff-related issues and boost bilateral trade, which both leaders have pledged to double in the coming years.

Trump-Modi Personal Chemistry Key to Progress

The reaffirmation of the Trump-Modi relationship plays a crucial diplomatic role as trade talks enter the final stages. President Trump has consistently praised Prime Minister Modi as a close friend and a strong leader, often referring to their personal connection as a driver for deeper strategic and economic ties. Leavitt’s recent statement adds weight to the notion that the two countries are nearing a significant milestone in their partnership.

The press secretary also hinted that President Trump himself might make the formal announcement, underscoring the importance of the deal to both administrations. She stated that the trade team was in its final phase of negotiations and that the announcement would happen “very soon.”

Trade Talks Nearing Final Stage

Ongoing discussions between trade officials from both nations have focused on addressing key issues such as tariffs on agricultural products, automobiles, and steel. India has been negotiating for greater access to the US market for its pharmaceuticals and textiles, while the US has been pressing India to lower import duties on American dairy, almonds, and other goods.

While the interim agreement is expected to stop short of a full-fledged Free Trade Agreement, it is likely to remove or reduce several contentious tariffs and boost market access for both sides. Reports suggest that India is prepared to offer tariff rate quotas on certain imports while ensuring that its domestic farmers and small manufacturers are protected.

Strategic Timing Amid Global Tensions

The potential trade deal comes at a time when global supply chains and trade alignments are undergoing significant shifts. With China’s economic rise and assertiveness reshaping the Indo-Pacific region, both the US and India are keen to strengthen their strategic cooperation. A finalized US-India trade deal would be seen as a signal of mutual trust and a counterbalance to Chinese influence in the region.

The announcement also holds political significance ahead of domestic milestones in both countries. With President Trump seeking to consolidate his foreign policy achievements, and India aiming to attract greater foreign investment and stabilize its trade ecosystem, the deal would serve the strategic interests of both nations.

Announcement Likely Before July 9

Sources indicate that both governments are working under an informal deadline of July 9, after which new US tariffs on select Indian exports could come into effect if no agreement is reached. Trade analysts believe the announcement could arrive within days, possibly accompanied by a joint statement or presidential address.

The White House’s confirmation of the strong Trump-Modi relationship and its assurance of an impending trade deal have generated optimism among business communities and policy observers. If finalized, the deal could mark a significant leap forward in US-India economic relations, setting the tone for broader and deeper cooperation in the years ahead.
