In a remarkable feat of endurance and courage, a six-year-old boy from Ropar (Rupnagar), Punjab, has scripted history by becoming the world’s youngest to scale Europe’s highest mountain peak, Mount Elbrus. Standing tall at 5,642 meters (18,510 feet), Mount Elbrus in Russia’s Caucasus Mountains is considered one of the most demanding climbs in the world. But that didn’t deter young Teghbir Singh, who reached the summit on June 28, at just six years and nine months of age, as reported by The Indian Express.

Accompanied by his father, Sukhinderdeep Singh, Teghbir defied harsh weather conditions, sub-zero temperatures, and high-altitude challenges to accomplish what most seasoned mountaineers only dream of. This historic ascent makes him the youngest person globally to climb Mount Elbrus, breaking the previous record held by a seven-year-old Indian climber.

Trained with Grit, Fueled by Passion

Teghbir’s journey to the summit was anything but spontaneous. For nearly a year, he underwent rigorous physical training under the guidance of retired mountaineering coach Bikramjit Singh Ghuman. His preparation included cardiovascular workouts, high-altitude simulations, trekking in local hills, and strength-building exercises. To adapt to extreme conditions, Teghbir also followed a strict diet plan and gradually trained with heavy mountaineering gear.

The young climber’s commitment was tested right from the start. The expedition, which began on June 20, had to be delayed twice due to a fierce snowstorm on Mount Elbrus. However, a short window of clear weather on the night of June 27 allowed Teghbir and his team to make the final push to the summit, which they reached on the morning of June 28.

Climbing with Confidence

Despite walking on snow for the first time and carrying gear that added 3 to 4 kg of weight to his small frame, Teghbir displayed remarkable confidence and discipline throughout the journey.

“I knew where I was to reach and finally I reached and had a picture with my father there,” said Teghbir, his face lighting up with joy as he recalled the summit moment. His statement reflects not just physical resilience but also a mental clarity rare for someone his age.

He also shared how difficult it was to walk in snow boots and harnesses, but added with a smile, “My shoes were heavy but I had practised it.”

Official Recognition

Teghbir’s achievement was recognized and certified by the Mountaineering, Rock Climbing and Sports Tourism Federation of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, the Russian authority governing the Elbrus region. The certificate validates his age at the time of the climb — six years, nine months, and four days — making his record official and globally acknowledged.

Previous Records and Future Ambitions

This is not Teghbir Singh’s first tryst with adventure. In April 2024, he successfully trekked to the Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Later, in August 2024, he became the youngest Asian to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, at just five years and eleven months. Both these expeditions earned him entries in the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records.

With three major summits under his belt even before turning seven, Teghbir has emerged as a youth icon and inspiration for aspiring adventurers across the globe. His parents, especially his mother Dr. Manpreet Kaur, have played a vital role in encouraging and nurturing his passion.

“We always ensured he was prepared — physically, mentally, and emotionally. His diet, routine, and motivation were all aligned towards this goal,” said Dr. Kaur.

A Symbol of Courage and Discipline

Teghbir Singh’s achievement is not just a personal milestone but a celebration of human spirit and determination. At an age when most children are exploring playgrounds, he is scaling some of the world’s tallest mountains with focus and grit.

This record-setting climb to Europe’s highest mountain peak by the world’s youngest summiteer has placed Ropar on the global mountaineering map and brought immense pride to Punjab and India.

As Teghbir now sets his eyes on future summits, the world watches with awe and admiration. His journey is a shining example of how age is just a number when courage, preparation, and passion come together.
