A powerful cloudburst in Uttarakhand has halted the Char Dham Yatra, leaving nine workers missing and triggering landslides that blocked several highways, isolating thousands of residents and pilgrims. The natural calamity has disrupted pilgrimage routes, paralyzed transportation in the region, and renewed concerns over disaster preparedness in the ecologically fragile Himalayan state.
The devastation began early Sunday in Uttarkashi’s Silai Band area along the Barkot–Yamunotri highway, where a sudden cloudburst caused a landslide that swept away nine labourers working at a hotel construction site. Emergency teams, including the NDRF, SDRF, and local police, launched a search and rescue operation. So far, ten workers have been rescued, while nine remain missing under the debris.
Char Dham Yatra Suspended Amid Heavy Rains
According to Economic Times, in response to the extreme weather, authorities announced a 24-hour suspension of the Char Dham Yatra, which includes sacred pilgrimages to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. A red alert for heavy rainfall remains in effect across the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. District administrations have advised pilgrims to halt their journeys at safer stops such as Haridwar, Rishikesh, Sonprayag, and Rudraprayag until conditions stabilize.
Officials have assured that all stranded pilgrims are being assisted and sheltered safely. However, with roads blocked and communication disrupted in many areas, relief efforts are proving difficult.
Landslides and Road Closures Isolate Over 40,000
The heavy downpour triggered landslides that blocked more than 70 roads, cutting off villages and key pilgrimage routes. In the Kumaon region alone, over 40,000 residents and travellers have been affected by road closures and power outages. Highways leading to Badrinath and Yamunotri were rendered impassable by mudslides, particularly near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. Restoration work is underway, but authorities warn that continuous rainfall is hampering progress.
Electricity supply has been disrupted in several villages, adding to the hardship of stranded locals and pilgrims. Efforts are being made to restore essential services and clear major roads.
Rescue and Relief Underway in Challenging Conditions
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is personally monitoring the situation and has instructed disaster response teams to remain on high alert. The State Emergency Operations Centre has issued travel advisories and has temporarily banned night travel on key routes leading to the Char Dham shrines.
In Silai Band, rescue workers are manually clearing debris as heavy machinery struggles in the slippery and narrow terrain. The priority remains locating the nine missing labourers while continuing road clearance and aid distribution.
Misinformation Adds to Chaos
Amid the crisis, authorities have cautioned against spreading misinformation. One individual has already been booked for sharing a misleading video claiming massive flooding near Kedarnath, which led to panic among devotees and their families. Officials stressed the importance of relying on verified updates from government sources to avoid unnecessary alarm.
Growing Climate Risks Demand Urgent Infrastructure Planning
Experts say that the increasing frequency of such events in Uttarakhand is a consequence of climate change, deforestation, and unchecked development in ecologically sensitive zones. They are calling for long-term measures including better drainage systems, strengthened slope protection, early warning networks, and disaster-resilient infrastructure in the state.
The Char Dham Yatra attracts lakhs of pilgrims annually, and even brief suspensions carry economic and emotional consequences. As unpredictable weather becomes more common, the need to integrate climate adaptation into development planning is being emphasized more than ever.
