June 26, 2025 – New Delhi – The 5th edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) will be held in Jaipur, Rajasthan this November, as announced by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The prestigious Under-25 sporting event will bring together over 4,000 athletes from more than 200 universities across the country, offering a national platform for India’s brightest young sporting talents.
The event will be jointly hosted by Poornima University and Rajasthan University, marking the first time Rajasthan will serve as host for the University Games.
A Launchpad for Emerging Talent
Since its inception in 2020 under the Khelo India initiative, the University Games have served as a vital stage for identifying and nurturing young athletes. Minister Mandaviya highlighted that the games provide a critical platform for university athletes to showcase their skills in front of national selectors, sports federations, and professional scouts. This focus aligns with India’s broader goal of creating a robust pipeline of sporting talent capable of competing at international levels.
Legacy of Competitive Excellence
The upcoming edition follows the successful KIUG 2024, which was held across cities in Northeast India. That edition saw participation from 4,500 athletes representing over 200 universities, with 770 medals awarded, including 240 gold, 240 silver, and 290 bronze.
Chandigarh University clinched the overall championship in 2024, followed by Lovely Professional University and Guru Nanak Dev University. Notably, several national-level records were broken during the event, reflecting the increasing level of competition and athletic standards among India’s youth.
Jaipur’s Debut as Host City
With Rajasthan stepping in as host for the first time, the 2025 University Games are expected to boost local sports infrastructure and participation. Poornima University and Rajasthan University will serve as the central venues, while other facilities across Jaipur will also be utilized. Preparations are already underway to ensure world-class arrangements for athletes, officials, and spectators.
This move is also symbolic of Rajasthan’s rising stature in Indian sports. The state recently delivered its best-ever performance at the Khelo India Youth Games, winning 60 medals and finishing in third place.
Multi-Sport Lineup and Participation
The 2025 edition will feature at least 20 disciplines, similar to previous versions. These are expected to include athletics, swimming, wrestling, boxing, basketball, volleyball, judo, shooting, football, and more. The inclusion of traditional Indian sports like kabaddi and kho-kho also highlights the program’s commitment to promoting indigenous games alongside global ones.
Athletes competing in the event are aged between 18 and 25, many of whom are in contention for future international representation in events like the Asian Games and the Olympics.
Strengthening the National Sports Ecosystem
The Khelo India University Games are a critical component of the broader Khelo India mission, launched in 2017 to revive grassroots-level sports and develop a culture of fitness. The initiative supports athletes with scholarships, infrastructure, coaching, and competitive exposure.
Minister Mandaviya emphasized that university-level athletes form the backbone of international sports in many countries. By investing in university sports, India is ensuring a structured and sustainable path for the next generation of champions.
The University Games complement other age-group tournaments like the Khelo India Youth Games (Under-18), recently hosted in Bihar, providing a seamless progression for young athletes.
