Victories in Punjab’s Ludhiana West and Gujarat’s Visavadar signal a resurgence for the party, especially in states where it has been trying to deepen its presence. AAP Retains Ludhiana West in Punjab
In Punjab, AAP managed to retain the Ludhiana West assembly seat, a significant urban constituency that had fallen vacant following the death of MLA Gurpreet Gogi. The party fielded Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, who secured a comfortable win over Congress’s Bharat Bhushan Ashu. The by-election witnessed a voter turnout of just over 51 percent, among the lowest seen in recent bypolls in the state. Despite the low turnout and some internal dissent over candidate selection, AAP’s organisational machinery managed to hold the seat.
This win comes as a relief for the ruling party in Punjab, especially after facing criticism over governance issues and law-and-order concerns. Gujarat Breakthrough in Visavadar
While AAP’s strength in Punjab has been established since its sweeping victory in the 2022 assembly elections, the win in Gujarat’s Visavadar is being viewed as more strategic and symbolic. AAP candidate Gopal Italia, a former state unit chief, defeated BJP’s nominee by a decisive margin. The other two bypolls saw Congress winning the Nilambur seat in Kerala, while BJP managed to retain the Kadi seat in Gujarat. The Congress victory in Kerala is largely seen as a regional outcome in a state where the party continues to hold a substantial support base. For BJP, holding on to Kadi offers some reassurance, but the loss of Visavadar to AAP will certainly raise questions about complacency and candidate selection.
