The compact SUV race in India saw a clear winner in May 2025 as Maruti Brezza emerged as the best-selling sub-4m SUV, outpacing rivals Tata Nexon and Kia Sonet. Despite a marginal dip in overall segment numbers, Brezza’s consistent performance once again underlined Maruti Suzuki’s stronghold in this crucial market segment.

Maruti Brezza Leads the Pack

Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza retained its top spot in the sub-4 metre SUV category with sales of 15,566 units in May 2025. While there was a slight month-on-month decline compared to April, Brezza’s year-on-year growth was encouraging. Known for its fuel efficiency, robust design, and extensive service network, the Brezza continues to attract urban and semi-urban buyers alike. Its petrol-only variant, combined with the popularity of its automatic transmission option, continues to deliver strong numbers.

Tata Nexon Maintains Strong Second Spot

The Tata Nexon, a consistent performer in the Indian market, held the second position with 13,096 units sold in May. While this was a 15% decline from April 2025, the Nexon still posted a healthy year-on-year growth of 14%. Tata Motors continues to benefit from offering both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric versions of the Nexon, appealing to a broader customer base.

Kia Sonet Steady in Third Place

Kia’s stylish Sonet held on to third place with 8,054 units sold. Its consistent performance reflects strong consumer preference for its design, premium interiors, and feature-rich trims. The Sonet’s appeal lies in its urban-friendly compact size, turbo-petrol engine option, and advanced infotainment systems that resonate with tech-savvy buyers.

Mahindra XUV 3XO Gains Momentum

One of the few models to post a positive monthly trend, the Mahindra XUV 3XO saw a 5% month-on-month increase, selling 7,952 units in May. The 3XO, launched last year, is gradually carving a niche for itself with its commanding stance and aggressive pricing. It is also helping Mahindra expand its footprint in the urban SUV space, long dominated by Maruti and Tata.

Sub-4m SUV Segment Witnesses Mixed Trends

The sub-4m SUV segment recorded a total of 62,633 units in May 2025 — a 7.5% decline compared to April but a modest gain over the previous year. While the top five models remained unchanged, others like the Hyundai Venue (7,520 units), Skoda Kylaq (4,949 units), and Renault Kiger (3,611 units) added competitive variety to the segment. However, some models, such as the Nissan Magnite and Tata Punch, saw significant month-on-month declines.

What’s Driving the Segment?

The surge in demand for compact SUVs is driven by multiple factors — affordability, increasing road presence, and the blend of fuel efficiency with SUV styling. With stricter emission norms and fuel economy preferences, many carmakers are also looking to introduce CNG and hybrid options. Notably, Tata Motors is reportedly working on a CNG version of the Nexon, while Skoda may follow suit with the Kylaq.

Maruti’s Dual SUV Strategy Paying Off

Maruti Suzuki’s success also stems from its dual-SUV strategy — the Maruti Brezza targets mature family buyers while the Fronx (with 13,584 units in May) caters to younger, first-time SUV buyers. Together, they are helping Maruti command over 40% of the compact SUV market share.

Outlook for H2 2025

As the Indian automotive sector gears up for the festive season, automakers are expected to roll out new feature-packed variants and possibly limited-edition trims to boost sales. The competition in the sub-4m SUV category is likely to intensify with updated models and more electric variants entering the fray
