Mohali ASI Tries to Run Over Vigilance Officer During Bribe Trap, Now on the Run

In a shocking incident that raises serious concerns about corruption within law enforcement, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police allegedly tried to mow down a vigilance officer during a bribe trap operation in Mohali’s Sohana area. The accused officer, Kamalpreet Sharma, is currently absconding, while police teams conduct raids to trace his whereabouts.
The incident took place after Harjinder Singh, a resident of Mohali, lodged a complaint with the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, alleging that ASI Kamalpreet Sharma had demanded a bribe of ₹50,000 to settle a road accident case. Based on the complaint, a trap was laid by a team of Vigilance Bureau officials led by Inspector Varinder Singh.
As per official reports, Sharma was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. However, when the vigilance team tried to apprehend him, he attempted to escape in his vehicle. In the process, he allegedly rammed his car into Inspector Varinder Singh, causing injuries. The inspector was taken to the civil hospital for treatment, and his condition is reported to be stable.
Following the attack, a case was registered against the ASI under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder, assault on a public servant, and obstruction of duty. A separate FIR has also been filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act for bribery.
Kamalpreet Sharma, who hails from Mansa and was residing in a rented accommodation in Mohali’s Sector 79, remains untraceable. Police and vigilance teams have launched search operations across possible hideouts, but as of now, he continues to evade arrest.
This dramatic turn of events has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stricter measures to curb police corruption. It also highlights the serious risks faced by vigilance officers who act against tainted officials.
Authorities have assured the public that the accused will be brought to justice and have reaffirmed their commitment to rooting out corruption from the force.
